I have not started yet...
modelbuilding hit kind of a snag - I have/had to work on improving my thesis. No model-building time until at least next weekend (July 10).
I am awaiting the release of the WEM PE set for the Hipper before starting the kit.

Got strted on my 350 scale Mogami on the 2nde. What isa with all the screws? 8 screws to put the hull together and looks like a bunch more to attach deck. Love the little magnetic screwdriver they included.....its a godsend with all those itty bitty screws

Welcome everyone! I started my IJN Tama on Monday. I got a bit more photoetch yesterday and should show some visible progress in a week or so. Happy building everyone.

Just compiled my drawings for the Pensacola for my Tassafaronga dio (yep, I'm too cheap to get the resin kit). This campaign will be a blast!

Hello all,
I am doing the R.N. Pola Italian Heavy Cruiser. It was a remote control model turned into a static model.
Now I need to figure what PE to buy for the model.
Cheers,

Hey guys, I picked up my kit for this build yesterday. I'm about halfway through an excellent book
Guadalcanal: The Definitive Account of the Landmark Battle by Richard B. Frank. it covers all aspects of the campaign to include the naval, air and ground battles. It has a great account of the Battle of Savo Island which got me interested in choosing one of the Cruisers that was sunk during the surpise night engagement the night of August 8-9, 1942 when the Japanese gave us a good whalloping and we lost 4 Heavy Cruisers. I decided on the Trumpeter 1/700 USS Astoria CA-34 (the great review on this site by Treadhead - Jay Massey helped with that decision). Talk about Cruisin' n Bruisin', the Astoria suffered a massive pounding from the Japanese and finally succumbed to internal fires and sank mid day on the 9th.

Still awhiles to start time for me. done half the research; configuration post Spain CW, early WWII (Norway campaign). Before splinter camo later war configuration. Will have to scratchbuild/fix the funnel from the kit, which is early configuration. I still have to map out what PE changes/additions to do.... oh, reminds me, need to make sure i have enough paint! lol cheers

Still waiting for the PE set. I also have enough other things to do these weeks. As soon as that is in, I will probably start.

I'm at the photo phase for my Mogami. Pretty much finished it. I figured it to take a lot longer, but those Tamiya kits just seem to fall into place. I've got a couple little finishing touches to do, then a photo or two for your enjoyment. I highly recommend this kit. A bit pricey, but if you look hard enough, you can get it cheaper. I think I got mine for right at $100.

Nice work on the Mogami Steve! It amazes me how many floatplanes were deployed on many of the Japanese cruisers.

Both ships look really nice!
I presume the Mogami is OOB...
And the PE work on the Tama looks wonderful.
I received the PE for the Hipper today, which at first glance looks really nice. Unfortunately, it seems, PE for the weapons seems not included, judging by the instructions... I hope mine (in 1/350) will come out looking half as good.
Probably get started this weekend, I think....

Nice work Anthony! Love the PE!
I ordered several PE sets from Tom's Modelworks which arrived in the mail yesterday.
So in addition to the base Trumpeter 1/700 USS Astoria I'll be adding:
#715 Cruiser Catapults
#704 3 Bar Rails
#711 20mm Guns
#717 US Heavy Cruiser
I can't wait to get home tonight and get to work!

I finally got a start last night on the DKM Hipper, although I admittedly spent today building some other hulls just for size comparison, as I was starting to think about how big these ships were.

From left to right (all in 1/350)
HMS King George V
DKM Bismarck
IJN Kongo (1944)
DKM Prinz Eugen
DKM Hipper
USS San Francisco (CA-38)
And now that I have had my fun, I have put the Prinz Eugen, KGV (which might be entered in the drydock campaign), Kongo and Bismarck back in their respective boxes, and work on the Hipper and San Francisco.
Fit of the Hipper deck is good. I have not yet mated the lower and upper hull though (only taped together for the image)

Interesting Picture Harm.
The differences in the Prinz Eugen / Admiral Hipper hulls are very noticable when put side by side

Steve – Excellent work on the Mogami! Congrats on the finish
Anthony – beautiful work on the Tama! Excellent PE & SB work at such a scale.
Harm – quite the fleet in progress you have there! Look forward to your Hipper

The relevant frets from White Ensign Models for the DKM Hipper
And now the first use of this fret on the lower platform of the funnel:

The fit was not perfect around the funnel (some sanding/cutting of one of the vents (?) along each side of the funnel was necessary to make it fit). The railing proved on the one hand sturdier than expected, on the other hand bent really easily. That said, what a difference does railing make! And I am so glad I have switched to Gator Glue, as I have no idea how I would have gotten this piece installed relatively cleanly as I have now using superglue... It takes longer (in total I probably spent over 1 hour getting this part fitted) but one can at least fit the part in stages and make adjustments....
