Did they use the U.S.S. New Jersey in Vietnam. I just recieved an old Otaki NJ, and I had a little idea about it bombarding N. Vietnam.

Thanks!

Yes. In fact, when the war was over the USS NJ had fired over 10,000 projectiles at the shore, over 3,000 them being the 16-inch projectile.

Chip, remember there were some pretty significent modifications made to the New Jersey between WWII and Viet Nam. Mostly around the super structure. I don't know anything about the kit you've got and if it represents her WWII or VN duty.

My Dad had a friend who worked in the Todd shipyard in Long Beach CA in the late sixties. He was able to take Dad and me down to the docks where they were working on both the New Jersey and the Queen Mary. There alonside of each other was some 150000 tons. A U-boat skippers wet dream. Two incredible ships.

Chip: Tamiya has a real nice kit of the Viet Nam era version in 350th scale. There is some new company out using the same molds I believe for a few bucks less. Check ebay or at a discount hobby shop you should be able to pick one up in the low 40 dollar range.

Blaster,

The two version that Tamiya has are the Missouri in a WWII fit and a New Jersey in 1980's fit. Gold medal models has a photo-etch set for the New Jersey that includes parts to make a Vietnam version. However, I would use the Missouri as the base kit.

Chip,

I had an ROTC Instructor, an Army aviator who had adjusted fire for the New Jersey, when he was in Vietnam. He claimed he could see the rounds before they impacted. He also said, that seeing the rounds, gave him an idea of their flight path, as the shock wave would throw around his helicopter!
