Hi Gary and welcome aboard.

Hopefully this Titanic's voyage will be a little smoother than the real ships.

There are pots of windows but luckily most of them have to be painted a wood colour. The only exceptions are the Officer's quarters windows which were steel and the windows looking our toward the bow which will be staying au natural brass.

Cheers mate

G'Day from wet AND cold Brisbane, well if you can call 15C cold..
An update on the Titanic which seems to be going way too smoothly at the moment..
I painted the window PE wih what I think is close to a teak colour. Some will need the paint removed as they were brass and some steel.

Then I turned my attention to, strangely enough, step 1 of the instructions, the focsile (I think) and forward well deck.

As you can see quite a bit of stuff had to be removed before the wooden deck sheets where applied. I am following the painting guide from the Titanic Modellers site hence the rust colour for the walls of the well deck rather than white as suggested by Academy.
And here is the piece with the wooden sheeting and rigging lines attached but no PE as yet.

I am thinking of using the same technique as I used with the QM2 leaving the white plastic unpainted as it saves heaps of time and looks fine when finished.
Does anyone have an idea how to make the intakes look more realistic? ie It would be good to have them look like a scoop rather than having a flush piece of plastic over the intake?
That's all for now. I am off to the bench to attach the PE where necessary.
Cheers all

That wood deck certainly gives the ship a whole new dimension!

Can't wait for more.....ship will be a knock out!

They are a great feature Joe.
I got a bit more done today before I ran out of steam. The forecastle and forward well deck has most of its PE but not the dinky little crane yet. Too easy to knock off as the railings would be just yet..

And made a start on the rear deck and rear well deck.

Oh and I worked out a way to hollow out the air intake thingies. Easy with a drill.
Cheers for now

Warren, I am eagerly watching your build as I am a big Titanic fan. I have the premium edition of this kit in my stash with the Tom's window frames and details too. I also have Titanic: A Model Maker's Guide by Peter Davies and Titanic in Photographs by Daniel Klistorner, Steve Hall, Bruce Beveridge, Art Braunshweiger and Scott Andrews. Both books are invaluable reference materials if you need any.
Keep it up and happy modeling,
Andrew

Hi there Andrew and welcome aboard!
I tend to spend all my money on kits and upgrades rather than reference material so any help in that area is most welcome. Do you have any info on what colour the metal parts of the large benches were painted? I am guessing black but any further info would be very good. The colour call outs for the Academy kit are not very comprehensive to say the least.
Cheers

Hi Everyone.

Another quick update..
This was the best I could do with the benches..

Then I just had to do 40 of them or so..

Then I put the first lot in position on the stern deck area..

Then the build hit its first iceberg..

Notice the window is too small for the opening. Not good. This is a common problem with this set and just throw away the instructions as they have very little basis on the reality of the kit.
Notice the window frames are all a little small in one dimension or another.

I may be able to fix the problem with some PVA glue.
We shall see but as it stands I couldn't honestly recommend this set in its present form.
More news tomorrow hopefully.
Cheers
Warren

PS Does anyone have some clear plans that show what sort of windows go where?
More tomorrow

Ay Carrumba Warren! How frustrating to have the windows not match! Can you identify if it is the Acadamy kit or is it the PE?

Hi Russell.

This set supposedly is for the Academy kit but the current owner of Tom's Modelworks tells me this set was done many years before he bought the company and he has no idea about its development.
Looks like it is up to me to make things fit. Very frustrating.

That's a real bummer Warren, you would expect PE to fit but this is like it was designed for a different model all together.
Zap-a-gap in large quantities?
I know you will soldier through this but it can be bloody frustrating to run into this sort of problem.
cheers mate,
Julian

Julian: you are right. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just a couple of windows, but the amount of windows on Titanic will be a real buzz kill!

Warren: I would have thought Tom's would have pulled it off the shelf and not sold anymore until they were able to update the PE?

Warren, sorry about the windows. I have that set too. The benches look great though, especially against the wooden deck. The black looks right but let me check my books and I will get back to you.

@ Julian, thanks for that.
@ Russell, maybe I am the first one to raise the concerns, but I don't think so..
@ Andrew, thanks heaps for that mate.

The adventure continues as I dodge the deadly icebergs of ill-fitting windows. But wait! The windows for the pieces on A Sprue actually fit well so I am assuming that C Sprue has been revised since the set was issued as they are the ones that don't fit very well. The instructions are totally useless though...
On with the show!!
The finished rear of the promenade deck..

And as you can see I didn't replace the windows you won't be able to see when it is all assembled..
And now some more finished walls with windows..

Until next time, same bat time, same bat channel..
Cheers

Warren, looking good!
Checked the references on the benches and it shows the wrought iron parts to be more satin. Don't know how much of a difference it makes in 1/400 scale.

Thanks Andrew.

Just a couple of pictures here but I have almost completed all the decks now..
As you can see these window openings had to opened up just a little..

And here is the A Deck having its superstructure held in place by a few clamps. I also had a stiff steel ruler held underneath to stop the bendy deck from.... bending..
I only have a little to do on the Bridge deck then I will be getting them attached as soon as I can. They will be much safer in the hull than sitting on book shelves.. And no chairs nearby...
Cheers all

This is the brief edition of the update as I just lost a heap of typing by hitting the wrong button, and my ulcer is playing up so please forgive the brevity..

Started attaching decks..

Then started on the centre decks. If you want to rig the funnels you can't do it the way the instructions say.. and there are no locating lugs or slots for the decks..

Lots of clamos needed and some deft application of liquid cement and CA for extra strentgh/
Bue for now I am off to bed for a while.
Cheers guys and gals (if there are any here)

Boy! Coming along nicely! Makes me want to break open my 1/400 kit instead of finishing my 1/700 Trumpy Yorktown.
Thanks for posting the progress.
