What did you have in mind?

Well, I was thinking, not another Wildcat, but maybe track down that P-400 that someone has kitted. The armor intrigued me as it;s not something I normally do, but both the LVT-1 and the M2A1 are not well represented in kit form. Tamiya does a 1/700 Benson(?) class DD. Could do one of the lost destroyers. Or if I get really ambitious (with a year time table) a Chicago, Helena or Minneapolis...

That might not have been the most productive use of my employers computer. But I enjoyed it. It appears that of the 19 American ships Wiki lists as being part of the First and Second Naval Battles of Guadalcanal, 16 have been kitted in 1/700 in one form or another. The 3 I didn't find; Benham and Sterett, both Benham class destroyers, and Helena, a St. Louis class cruiser. Now for some deci$ion making...

Mark you have a nice choice of US ships for this campaign and an even bigger one if you include the other allied ships and Jap ships. On the other hand a M2A4 would be good but I know what you mean, it's not on the top of the mainstream manufactures lists. A little digging has revealed that the Marine A Company, 1st tank battalion had a mix of M2A4 and M3 Stuarts during the battles

Here's a link to a 1942 photo on Guadalcanal which shows two M2A4's and an M3. Commander models make a M2A4 in resin if that's any help Here

It looks like we have enough. When will it commence and when will it wrap up?

I also need to know what scale and whether a campaign ribbon will be made up?

MMMMM M3 Stuart might be tempting. A little research shows the Marines used both the M3 and the M3A1.

Bill PM sent, campaign form submitted 4th April

Anyone up for designing a medal? I haven't a clue on how to do that sort of thing.

Well, that's an embarrassment of riches. THere are a number of M3 and M3A1 kits available in both 1/72 or 1/35. There are even several flavors of P-400 out there too.

All signed up. Now to acquire all the AM it will take to backdate the USS North Carolina to a 1942 configuration.

Thanks Luciano for this Campaign. Looking forward to it.

I have an old Revell Dauntless I want to try for this with. I want to try and improve the tail gun, dive flaps and bomb latches.

Hi guys. I am going to join in and build something for this. I had originally planned to stick to my roots and build a 1:48 Marine F4U Corsair, but what the hell I want to try a ship for a change. I just recently went to Charlestown, SC and took time to visit the USS Yorktown museum along with the USS Laffey. Laffey's history kind of caught my interest so I ordered Dragon's 1/350 smart kit of the original Laffey lost off of the 'Canal. I am going to build her for the campaign. Just be prepared for me to ask a lot of questions for hints and tips with building ships.

Paul, nice to have you along, as a newb to ships don't be afraid to ask questions. As for Laffey your also in good hands as Si (Reduster) is also building that kit for the campaign and I'm in the middle of build the Benson (sister ship) in 1945 kit so will have knowledge of most of the kit parts.

Michael a wingy thing, nice one.

I did feel obliged to keep it a naval wingy thing.

But then, I prefer naval wings.

Well I think everyone's disappeared at least 14 have shown an interest but only 5 have signed up so far.

Here's the link

Anyway my plans for the Portland have hit a snag, after checking plans (thanks Dave) and photos I've found Portland was heavily modified during her repairs after the battle which made her more like her sister which would be fine if I wanted to build her after the battle however during the battle she looked a lot different. The main area being the bridge work and secondary directors and as the kit is based on the Indy in 1944 that's a lot of scratch work I feel I'm not up too. So plan 'B' I'll pick up the Trumpeter 1942 San Francisco to build as the 'Nasty Asty'.

Ok! I'm in with an airplane since I don't have any water thingies.

QUESTION: Did the Rufe take part in the Guadalcanal campaign?

After looking at several of the links I may change my entry to either an M2 or M3 armor.

OK I signed on, that's 9.

@Bob. Good luck on the M2. I'm still considering an M3 but the 2's seem awfully scarce.

Howdy Y'all
@Bill: Don't we have to wait until August to start building?

Does anyone know of decals for an USMC M-3 Stuart at Guadalcanal?

Take care,

Bob, I've done some checking on the web and found that the Kamikawa Maru auxiliary seaplane carrier of No.1 group 11th seaplane tender Div. carried A6M2-N Rufe floatplanes (along with Petes) during at least the early part of the campaign. The tail code for the Rufes on the Kamikawa Maru was YII-xx.

Don, I'll have a look round but I'm not much of an armour guy so can only check the standard sources.

This sounds fun. I am in.

I guess with something flying. A lot of options to choose from.

Mark, if you want to go with a P-400 go with the Eduard 1/48 offering. Very good quality.

Howdy Dave
I have that photo in Zbiegniewski's "M3 and M4 Tanks in Pacific Combat 1942-1945" and it is referred to belonging to the 1st Marine Armored Battalion, Solomon Islands 1943. I might go with it and build it for this campaign unless there are some objections. I just posted info on Armorama about this. I have the decals so this would be a great build for me.
Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

@Don, FWIW, I found 1/72 transfers for US Army trocks. They might have something you could use.
@Jesper. Thanks I usually build 1/72. I'll take a look.
