Hello all,

I did 6 months on the Canal a few years ago now, and took the follow photographs.

The LVT had a 3 legged, pintle mount for a 50cal on the right front of the hull; the universal carrier had all but rotted into the jungle. More for anyone's use here than anything. It was a great, if somewhat bizarre place to go. I would not want to fight there.

OK, not sure what's going on with the LVT, but it isn't uploading. Will try later... it was in a grave yard of 21 LVTs that had been driven up and the beach, and walked away from...

I have a walk around of both vehicles, if anyone is interested. PM me and I will forward what I have.

regards,

Kylie

Are you going to allow early starts for this campaign. I know the rules say no but wanted to see if exceptions will be considered. Thanks

@Jesper. Thanks I usually build 1/72. I'll take a look.

I think they might have it in 1/72 as well. Anyway, hope you find a good kit and looking forward to see your build when we get started.

I've spotted a couple of P-400's from RS, but I haven't seen one from Edward. Intriguing thought, I'd like to try an Edward kit, so I'll spend a little time looking for it.

Mark, I have the weekend edition Eduard P-400, kit code 8471, it appears to have been dropped from Eduard's catalog as it's no longer listed. Hasegawa also released a P-400 for which Eduard do some pe sets.

Dave, I've had a think about this and made a decision.

If you are in another campaign that runs concurrently (ie. Cruiser campaign) then you may start your build however you must post a blog with the usual un-started photo and the kit may not be more than 50% complete by the time of the official start date.

I hope that sounds fair.

I know for some even 12 months can be a tall order if building a battlewagon or carrier.

Lucky,

I appreciate the consideration. My request is based on a combination of things, one is the mutliple campaigns but the other is that I will be moving sometime after the new year to an as yet unknown location. I will move slowly and ensure I am not more than 50% built.

thanks again.

Ok been playing around with my limited graphics knowledge to try and design a ribbon and came up with a map of Guadalcanal.

What size should the ribbon be?

Let me know what you think or if anyone can come up with something better I'll let you all decide.

So, a Guadalcanal campaign? Well, I think I know just the thing. Came in the mail yesterday:

 photo 2015-05-02_17-46-43_631_zps0yzyp24y.jpg

I think it will go quite well with:

 photo SH kit_zpsuuqrviow.jpg

By the way, I have it on pretty good authority (namely, this excellent book:)

 photo 2015-05-02_17-47-15_785_zpssiweacwt.jpg

that this aircraft was actually named "Hell's Bell" rather than "Hell's Bells". I think Hell's Bell is much more clever!

In short, I believe I'm in!

Guess I'm over prepared now... RS 1/72 P-400, Academy 1/35 M3, somewhere around 4 1/700 destroyers. Wonder If the hobby shop sells time machines so I have enough time to build just 1 of these kits.

With my daughter's prodding and a 50% coupon off from Michael's in my hand, I ended up picking up this kit yesterday in the hopes of it being a type used in the Guadalcanal landings.

To my relief, they were (designated as LCP(R)s).

Hey all,

Since Luciano said that I could begin a little early due to a near future move I decided, against better thought, to begin the USS North Carolina.

I will transfer to the Official Campaign Thread once it is established.

SO here is my beginning picture.

OK, so I guess the pictures with the date are a little silly since I am starting before the start date...ummm Luciano do I need to post an updated picture of where it is at after the Campaign start?

The kit is the Trumpeter USS North Carolina in the 1945 fit. I am back dating her to 1942 and will be using the Hunter wood deck, WEM PE .50 Cal machine Guns, the GMM North Carolina Kit, L'Arsenal 1.1 Quad Machine guns, and will make a future purchase of Alliance Model Works US Radar to backdate to the Radars.

I chose to mount the waterline bottom.

here it is before mounting.

The next move was removing the MK51 Gun Directors from the aft deck.

Before:

After:

HAHA, looks like all I did was create two large holes. The Hunter Deck is for the 1945 fit so I will need to remove the openings for these somehow..

So that brings me to mounting the deck. I mounted the fore deck and began dry fitting the middle and the aft deck...oh to my surprise the deck sections are too long.

hmmm..I do believe I have found the most frustrating problem you can have...the deck is too long. crap.

anyway, I began sanding and continue to sand.It will be my luck that the Hunter Wooden deck will also be too long...guess I will find out later.

well that's it for now. Thanks for looking in.

Michael nice choice and something different, I'll admit to not knowing this kit so will watch your build when the time comes.

Dave nice start, the official thread is available for the start and to be fair to everyone else I think an update photo in the official thread would be a good idea once we start proper. As you may know I have the NC in my stash to build in a '45 fit so I'll be watching your build and taking notes on fit issues like the deck!

Luciano,

Thanks for the information. I will make sure to provide a photo after the start.

I only intend to mount the deck, paint the hull and then add the wooden deck, that should be the extent of my progress come the start date.

Since I am going to be home for 30 days starting in two weeks I will have plenty of time to finish the Maya and the USS Heermann before the start of the campaign. Oh, and the USS Dace too...

thanks again for letting me get a start.

No problem Dave and you need to get those other ships finished for their campaigns. I'm just waiting on an order from Free Time Hobbies as they were the only people that had the blue stained wood deck in stock for the San Fran '42 (Nasty Asty), while I was at it I also ordered their North Carolina 16" turret upgrade set.

OK guys we're on the one month to go timer. So get those benches cleared and lend your support to those marines (or not if your doing something Japanese).

We land on the beaches on August 7th.

Nice one Si, clocks ticking down.

OK bit of an issue that needs an admins help, how do I upload an award ribbon and what size should it be?

Luciano,

The ribbon should be 50x20 pixels and in .gif format. Once you have one ready on your computer, go to the campaign page. To the right of the part that has the campaign description, you should see a line that says "Admin: Create Award". Click on the underlined text and you should go to a page that will ask you to name your award. Once you do that, click on the button underneath that says "ADD AWARD" and that should take you to a page that will allow you to upload your ribbon from your computer.

Hope that helps!

DOH! Here I was wondering why such an odd date to start. Of course, the aniversary of the landings. The mind goes first.

If you are looking for a little inspiration check out James Hornfischer's book "Neptune's Inferno". It is an excellent read on the USN's participation at Guadalcanal along with a lot of backstory for the ships and crews that fought.
