This weekend's progress.

Basic start to the weathering on U93



One small job I overlooked before I painted the deck, was removing the mount for "Y" gun. Done and painted over. There will be extra reload depth charges sat over that spot, so I haven't filled and filed.



More sub assemblies, "X" gun deck, and the 0.5" platform etched up.



The searchlight and emergency control platform as supplied.



etched up, the moulded on binnacle has been replaced with a North Star models part, and a spare wheel has been found and fitted.

The contents of the box, resin, hardener, mixed pots and measuring kit.

Thanks Jan,

You and me both, need to some experimenting with it first. Intend to use a foil base as usual, and use the "solid water" to add depth to the confused wake between the ship and the boat, id it works, might lead to some interesting projects in the future.

welcome aboard. The "Solid Water" will take a little experimentation, but I am hopeful it will work.

Because my time in the workshop tends to one decent session at the weekend (two if I am lucky!) by working on more than one thing at time I always have something I am not waiting for paint or glue to dry. just organisation, keeping the sprue in their own boxes, the only danger is mixing the etch up! keeps me on my toes.

WA white on the main superstructure components.

WA blue (lifecolor) added to the funnels and funnels fitted.

Cracked on with this project today.

Main armament sprayed.



Bent gun barrel was very easily straightened.

A gun in place with trainer, gunlayer and one of the loaders in place.



The U boat gets 3 figures on the conning tower, the captain is at the aft end, with the white cap cover, probably praying they are going to clear Hesperus' bow.

Funnel stays.



B gun platform / lower bridge in place.



Start to weathering the hull, Hesperus was a very hard worked destroyer.

going to be a very dramatic diorama when completed

Today's progress.

One thing missing from the kit is the splinter matting that goes around the searchlight platform and the 3" gun platform. Two things on models that really grate with me are perfectly painted D Day strips on aircraft and neat splinter matting on ships.

Some little bits of plastic strip cut up ready to make the individual mats.



Some of mats shaped and detail scribed on them.

Reason for the vessel having no "Y" gun, and not needing to fill the location hole, extra depth charge stowage.



Mats around the searchlight painted and a wash added to bring out the detail.



details still need picking out and the searchlight and some crew need adding before putting in place.

Very cool updates, Si! Quite some scratch work again, and the figures really bring the dio to life!!
This is going to be a very nice diorama of that battle!

I must admit I am quite pleased with the splinter matting, bit tedious, but once you get in the zone, like anything repetitive it isn't too bad.

The figures are a mix of North star & Fujumi, just hope I have enough to go round.

The trick is now going to be getting the figures in the right place.

The kit 12pdr is white metal, not the best, a some etch would have helped though. Sorry mate, one of my favourite Whinges, lack of help for open gun mounts.
