Like I have any history of finishing a campaign.... I've got at least 3 ships in dry dock. Revell's USS Drum, HMS Nelson and USS Johnston. Sign me up...

Those were meant to be propellers, not the "II" for the campaign! I will set it as the ribbon as soon as we have a campaign page. I sne the proposal in a few days ago.

Here is my initial build in this campaign.




DML's 1/700 HMS Trafalgar. It was hard to find as I put it inside another box. I just have to fit the upper fin back on. I plan to hand paint it.

Some were. Others had upper and lower hulls of different diameters. I tried these to get out of my modelling slump and promptly ran into one of these. I think the Trafalgar and Yushio were real nice.

My biggest problem was getting the stand to look good. Trying to get the letters to stand out were a problem. I think this one was an experiment where I painted it black then lightly sanded the paint off the letters.

An approach you might try is oil over acrylic. On my Niña build, I started with a base coat of Tamiya Desert Yellow XF-59 acrylic followed by a coating of Grumbacher Raw Umber artist’s oil. The oil paint will cover but won’t attack the acrylic base color. When I took a thinner-dampened towel and wiped the oil paint away, it left dark brown shadows in the recessed areas and a nice brownish filter over the rest of the ship and name plate.

I was going for a wood effect, but of course you could use any colors you want. The beauty of this technique is that it is quick, super easy, and you don’t have to be precise at all (this was my first attempt).

Hi John,

It looks like you’ve aleady made a good start on this one! As I recall the weapons on this kit were pretty weak, so your idea to use HR Products upgrades is definitely on target. You might also consider the Gold Medal Models brass photoetch set. I haven’t used this one myself, but I did use GMM’s set for the Revell box-scale Taney, and I can tell you that it made a world of difference!

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the recommendation. I took a look at the pe set you mentioned. It does look good but its not in the budget right now. Plus, being such a noob with pe I'd probably make a hash of it. Any pointers for scratch building improvements would be appreciated.

John, I’ve screwed up more photoetch myself than I’d care to admit! Still, the best way to improve your skills is to keep hacking away at it. Notwithstanding the occasional disaster, my own efforts seem to get a little better each time...

As for budget, Tom’s Modelworks makes brass for Buckley too that is about half the price of the GMM set.
