This is a really nice kit, I will be replacing the light AA, but the rest apart from the changes to airwing, and little light scratch-built detail she will be pretty much out of the box.

A bit more progress last week & over the weekend.
The funnels (well a start).
The parts for one funnel (stbd forward) removed from the sprue and cleaned up.
The fixed section built up, in order to make sure of the fit, the mounting frame is not fixed at this point.
Test fitting.
The mouthing frane has been fixed.
The port forward funnel build, with the funnel in the lowered position.
The funnels, if careful with painting & assembly cam be left in a working condition.
The stbd fwd funnel in the raised position.
and lowered.
The ship has 15 racks of three liferafts. the production line under way.
The first five fited in place, along with some ladders & railings.

Hi Tim,
I have always loved the quirky design of the Ranger, that and my soft spot for "forgotten" ships, this build just had to be done.
It looks like Trumpy have done a decent job on the funnels, the option to have them raised or lowered is excellent.
Good to be making progress again. I have ordered a pack of the Master unshielded quad bofors, to replace the rather basic shielded kit mounts.

More detail going on starboard side.
The etched cranes, one yet to be folded, the brass is a little on the thin side for my taste, but it does work, if handled with extreme care.
Fitted in place.
Nice that you get the winch to sit at the base of it.
All the rafts and bits and pieces fitted along the maindeck stbd side.
One issue with the kit quad 40mm are the latter shielded mounts. looking at the photographs, the actual ship had unshielded mounts, so I have acquired these.
They have the advantage that they will look better than the kit mounts too.

I know what you mean Mark.
The shape of the cranes makes using a folding tool tricky, a good pair of fine pliers and needle nose tweezers, aided by some praying and swearing, the first one got there. one more to go.

The second crane folded to shape, an a few other bits and pieces to go on the port side.
Fitted in place, one boat still on the sprue. (trumpeter instructions can be a little confusing)
etched details being added.
Both after 5" gun decks fitted.
stern details going on.
Starboard side catwalks fitted.
the flight deck test fitted in place.

decks need to be painted on the port catwalks, I will thinking about guns and aircraft. Still need decals for the aircraft, as the stars and bars had a red border for this period, and none of the ones I have are like that. looking, but no success so far.

I can't imagine how much stuff has to be considered when outfitting a ship. They must have a template of just the basics for each class of ship?

Hi Mark,
I can only speak from the experience of working for a Shipowner having new merchant ships built, not so much a basic template, but a very detailed checklist, everything from the rating of main cargo pumps to the number of toilet seats, and much more. I would imagine for warships it is a lot more complicated, especially a carrier.

The port side walkways fitted.
with the flight deck test fitted.
Fitting the ladders going down from the catwalks.
The catwalks going past the funnel positions, having studied the photos, it would appear these are dropped back in place after the funnels have been lowered for flying ops.

never was a big admirer of flat tops until the last few years, but the more I see and read about them, the more I've come to appreciate their technological achievement and now some of my favorite ships are flat tops!
Si, Your build is certainly a great tribute to a landmark ship in terms of the USN's development of the carrier vessel type
