Do you mean Buckley? If so then that is the wrong PE set for a Fletcher as the Buckleys are destroyer escorts. Very different ships.

Kidd is a square bridge "Repeat" Fletcher. Her present configuration is as an anti-kamikazi late war Fletcher, modified by some minor post war work, and from what I know of the movie (I have not seen it) that is the configuration of the ship today.

It is not impossible to take the Tamiya kit, depicting a very early round bridge Fletcher, and build he as a late war square bridge, but it will entail a lot of scratch building. Luckily there are some 3D printed resin parts available from Model Monkey that will help, but still, a lot of scratch building will be required.

Still though, all in all the Tamiya Fletcher is a better kit in my opinion, much better than the Trumpeter, which is actually closer to the Kidd.

I will be watching this build as the Fletcher's are particular favorites of mine.

Ezra: Model Monkey has the bridge and pilot house you will need in 3D resin. They also have the gun tubs for the quad 40mm and the director housing to go with them.

Those are the very least of your concerns. The forward deck house will require the most scratch building I would think where you must get rid of the 2omm single tubs and substitute 40mm twins in their place.

Model monkey also has the proper 5" mounts too. The ones that come with the kit are far from accurate.

Ezra: Go to the Model Warships site. On their title page they have a link that goes exclusively to Model Monkey, and not through Shapeways. Click on the appropriate scale at the top of the page and scroll down to 1/350 USN Destroyers. You will find all the items there that I mentioned including the quad 40mm gun tubs. I am the worlds worst at providing any links to anywhere. Comes with age I guess.

I just bought toms model works fletcher set just to up the tamiya kit a little. So don't worry you super detail ship fanatics, there will be a fair amount of photo etch!

I think I just saw some dual 1/35 40mm mounts Model Shapeways? I’m looking forward to the film, but some of the previews are a bit over the top. I know the USS Buckley (a DE) had a running battle with the U-66 resulting in the Buckley ramming the U-66 and eventually sinking it, but I’m not aware of any such “close surface encounters” of U-boats and Fletchers. Good luck hunting the dual mounts. For some reason, the 40mm dual mount has been overlooked by mainstream manufacturers.

Thanks, Russ your right about the movie being over the top but what the heck it has Tom Hanks! I also found a six set of dual bofers on eBay, buts its a little pricey...$25, so ill check those out!
