Hi all, This is my first ever post or log on model shipwrights!Im going to be building the Tamiya 1/350 Fletcher class destroyer with a custom Greyhound paint job ( really USS Kidd.) from the movie " greyhound." Ill be starting the build in a couple days because I go it off eBay for the ridicules price of $18.50 and it also comes with a full Beckley class destroyer photo etch set, as well as the tamiya 1/350 scale figure set! A total steal! First update coming soon!

Beckley class destroyer photo etch set

Do you mean Buckley? If so then that is the wrong PE set for a Fletcher as the Buckleys are destroyer escorts. Very different ships.

Im not planning on a 100 percent accurate build im building Greyhound from the movie "greyhound" ( It will look like the USS Kidd with a different set of markings.)

I know its the wrong photo etch set its just what came free with the kit so I just thought "what the heck." Hopefully I can use the photo etch depth charge racks and railings. ( but dont quote me i'm an armour modeler this is my first ship!)

Kidd is a square bridge "Repeat" Fletcher. Her present configuration is as an anti-kamikazi late war Fletcher, modified by some minor post war work, and from what I know of the movie (I have not seen it) that is the configuration of the ship today.

It is not impossible to take the Tamiya kit, depicting a very early round bridge Fletcher, and build he as a late war square bridge, but it will entail a lot of scratch building. Luckily there are some 3D printed resin parts available from Model Monkey that will help, but still, a lot of scratch building will be required.

Still though, all in all the Tamiya Fletcher is a better kit in my opinion, much better than the Trumpeter, which is actually closer to the Kidd.

I will be watching this build as the Fletcher's are particular favorites of mine.

your right about the bridge and I may scratch build it because I took a ton of photos when I say the ship and it shouldnt be that hard to do it. and for the AA guns I may get a resin set.

Does anyone know of any 1/350 scale double barreled oerlikon cannon sets that ship from the US?

Ezra: Model Monkey has the bridge and pilot house you will need in 3D resin. They also have the gun tubs for the quad 40mm and the director housing to go with them. Those are the very least of your concerns. The forward deck house will require the most scratch building I would think where you must get rid of the 2omm single tubs and substitute 40mm twins in their place.

Model monkey also has the proper 5" mounts too. The ones that come with the kit are far from accurate.

About ten years ago, I was commissioned to do a “square bridge” Fletcher (The USS Johnston) in 1/72 from the Revell kit. About a month after I started, I received a second commission for the same ship in 1/350 scale. “Square Bridge” is really a misnomer, as the bridge has 8 flat surfaces not counting the roof. In addition, those late war Fletchers had Robust additional 40mm modified positions amidships, a different fantail arrangement, and upgraded forward AA mounts replacing the 20mms as was mentioned above. So, get whatever help you can from the aftermarket if possible, because the conversion work will be quite extensive from the early “Round Bridge” Fletchers. I believe Revell has released a 1/72 “Post War German Navy” “Square Bridge“ Fletcher. Even then the weapons mounts are different. But in 1/350 scale, your project should be manageable, as long as you go aftermarket, or are a good scrathbuilder. At the time, I had to scratch everything, including the 40mm dual mounts. I too recommend getting the Eduard or Toms model works Fletcher PE set though, it will save you lots of trouble. Good luck.

Ezra: Go to the Model Warships site. On their title page they have a link that goes exclusively to Model Monkey, and not through Shapeways. Click on the appropriate scale at the top of the page and scroll down to 1/350 USN Destroyers. You will find all the items there that I mentioned including the quad 40mm gun tubs. I am the worlds worst at providing any links to anywhere. Comes with age I guess.

Your right Russ about AM parts. looking at pics of the Kidd they changed out all the AA guns, im up to my neck in after market parts and I still need more! Do you know of any manufacturers that ship from the US that sell dual orlikon cannons in 1/350? I can find everything I need but that.

I think I just saw some dual 1/35 40mm mounts Model Shapeways? I’m looking forward to the film, but some of the previews are a bit over the top. I know the USS Buckley (a DE) had a running battle with the U-66 resulting in the Buckley ramming the U-66 and eventually sinking it, but I’m not aware of any such “close surface encounters” of U-boats and Fletchers. Good luck hunting the dual mounts. For some reason, the 40mm dual mount has been overlooked by mainstream manufacturers.

Ezra,
I just checked Model Shapeways for you, and I must be mistaken, I couldn’t find them. I swear I’ve seen them someplace though. You’re right, it’s worth it to see TH “in action”.
