Welcome Jim!
My inclination is to say no to Destroyer Escorts. They don't really fit the role of destroyers in that they were primarily designed as convoy escorts and ASW work while Destroyers were primarily supposed to fleet escorts. USS England had a top speed of only 23 knots for instance.
Most other navy's of the time classified them as Frigates and in the 1970's the USN designated them as such too. A prime example of that is the Buckley Class which the Royal Navy designated as the Captain Class Frigates.
Well, it's a good thing I have a Fletcher-class in the stash as well as the Butler-class DE. Just need to get some PE for the Fletcher. However, I also have a Pit-Road 1/700 Sovremenny-class destroyer in the stash as well, but does anyone know where I can get a decent set of P/E and decals? I picked to kit up at a model show, and the decals are not the ones from the kit.

Jim,
Gold Medal Models has a beautiful etch set for the Sovremenny and other Soviet cruisers, destroyers, and frigates. Their sets aren't cheap, but they are among the best in the business.

I agree, I always go with G.M.M. as my first choice.

I'll be doing the 1/700 JAG collective Gearing as the USS Miles C. Fox in FRAM trim, as it's what Dad served on. I wish there was a FRAM conversion for the 1/350 Dragon gearing class.

I have:
1/350 Buchanan from Dragon with their extra goodies.
1/350 Fletcher from Tamiya with Tom's brass
1/350 Kelly from WEM
1/350 Winston S. Churchill from Panda
And, if I don't have anything else to do for the year:
1/144 Fletcher from Revell with Eduard etch.
Yipes!

That's an interesting mix of ships. I look forward to seeing who you choose.

And, after actually dragging the W.S. Churchill off the shelf I find that at some point I actually snagged the WEM etch set for it. So there's that.

Unfortunately the reduced image of my proposed ribbon doesn't really work as it is so small that the text is illegible and the beautiful ship is reduced to a smudge.
What do you all think of this image instead?
This higher contrast one with larger letters may be more viable in tiny size!

This is a tough one as different navies rate their ships differently so a frigate in one navy is called a destroyer in another. A good example of this is the Spanish Alvaro de Bazan class frigates. Called frigates but due to size (6k tons), role and weapons suite are considered destroyers.
Let me know which FFG you are looking to build and I will see if she fits into the category.

Tim,
Thanks for pointing me towards GMM. I had kind of forgotten about them. I contacted Free Time Hobbies, and they are ordering the WEM set for me (which I thought was very nice if them). Hopefully I can contact Pit-Road about the kits decals, but their site is all in Japanese.

My pleasure, Jim - GMM's Loren Perry is a retired Navy guy, and he has always taken the care to get the details right!

Ok, the second Tin Can Sailors image I created didn’t really work either; it looked fine full sized, but in ribbon size the text became an illegible mess.
So... how do we like this image?
It is simpler, but the larger text is still legible in tiny size!
I also made a version with no text:

Hi Tim,
Without text for me, it is cleaner, it such an iconic tin can that it speaks for itself.
Cheers

I like them both, which isn't much help. I guess I prefer with text.

The Fletcher profile is sweet. I like it without the text. Only other thing might be to lighten the sky and darken the water.

I like with the text.
I am in with whatever I can find in the stash. I believe there is a destroyer somewhere 😀
