Aren't you supposed to clear the decks before you fire like that? They are nuts!

Wouldn't the backblast knock of anyone on deck coz I remember how they had to clear the deck when the old girl, USS Missouri fired her guns?

Thank you for sharing Garry!!

Pretty impressive pictures! But the one that impressed me the most (oh my God I am so boring!!) was this one:

The colour of the deck just catch my eye! It must be an all new re-planking!

It looks strange

You know why they're all lined up along the deck don't you?

They're looking for the bodies of the idiots who were sucked off the deck in the other photo!

"Nuts" dosen't even begin to cover it.

But you have to admit, it would be kinda cool too!

Good day Rui!
Yes the deck wood does look different. One thing it is wet, but I am sure the planks were newely replaced. Other photo's taken from aircraft at the same period show the deck to be a much lighter color. Though decks were holley stoned from time to time to keep the finish renewed. Interesting indeed!

Cheers

So sorry to disappoint ya'll, but Garry's picture is a fake. I've seen it a few times before. It's like that picture of the Great white shark leaping out of the water trying to get the guy swinging from the helicopter in San Francisco Bay. That's what Steve Nuttal meant by a cloning job. The Navy is not that stupid to allow dim-witted reporters to do that. My laugh was in the picture of the deck of the BB is why is the crew all lined up on both sides of the ship looking outward?

It's called "Manning the Rails"..... a Naval Tradition.......carried out by every US Naval warship, upon entering and leaving certain posts..... ALWAYS done when passing the the USS Arizona.

Thanks for the info Dave. I like that tradition. I thought that they only lined the rail when passing the Arizona on the side that passed, now I know.

Well, I don't know how the "New Navy" does it, but when I was in, we manned the entire rail, when entering and leaving our home port, when passing in review, and when passing the Arizona, and any other ports the Captain felt deserved the honor. And manning the rail was done by the entire crew. The only members excused were those on sea and anchor detail, or in sick bay. Of course that was many moons ago. The Navy has changed a great deal since I was in, and it wouldn't surprise if manning the rail has changed also. My first ship still had a wooden flight deck when I reported aboard.... and had it all the way until she was decommissioned.
If fact an old shipmate visited her, several years ago, and was nice enough to snag me a piece of her flight deck, even though I wasn't a plank-owner.

If you'd know what photoshop can do....you wouldn't be sure of the reality of any picture anymore! :-)

Same here in Portugal (not when passing by the USS Arizona - I never had that good chance)!
But when leaving / entering harbour we had the same procedure, but manned only to Port or Starboard, depending on the honoured side.
