What was the name of that movie? Cary Grant and Tony Curtis were in it. They only had red and white paint to paint the ship and not enough of either so they blended it. They also had a pack of female nurses on board they had resucued. The title had something to do with Petticoats. See it if you ever get the opportunity.

USS Balao (SS-285) had the honor of playing the pink submarine in "Operation Petticoat".
There actually was a pink submarine in the south-west pacific early in the war, for the reason described in the movie. It was I believe a Narwhal class, which were used for island supply, and removal of personel. The pink color was arrived at by mixing red lead, and grey.
The bizarre case of the rejected requisition for toilet paper actually happened to the submarine, USS Skipjack and a sarcastic letter, in reply, was sent to the Naval Supply Officer at Mare Island, CA.
USS Balao (SS-285) was repainted in her pink colors in 1975, in honor of her starring role, but was repainted a short time later, as the humor wore thin.
Bob Hope always said it was his biggest regret that he turned down this movie.

I loved that movie! That and Father Goose!

What was the name of that sub..the Tiger something....

Great photo :-)

I should ask Frank about this...he might know which sub it was since he was on the Narwhal. I should ask him again about the all blue sub he said tied up next to them a Pearl.
