Makes me sad. This guy lives in the Dallas metroplex, but won't let anyone come see it. It would be great if he had an "open house" and the Dallas platoon could come see and photograph the hell out of it. Well maybe it's time to go buy a lotto ticket. Then I'll buy it and it can stay in Dallas and all you guys can come visit to see it. :-)

This thing should be in a museum somewhere....the Navy must have a Naval museum, or even the Smithsonian, put it on display for all to see!!!

wasn't that the 1/72nd model featured in FSM a few years ago. I seem to recall that the guy added onto his house just for it. And It seems as though I recall he was from the Dallas area.

Wonder if he built anything else during the 19 years? After that muchtime on a project what do you do when you're done? Must feel like part of your life is missing

I remember the article in Fine Scale Modeler which I still have. I used a couple of the photos to help with a couple of spots on my 1/350 version. I know that the Norfolk Naval Base has a pretty nice museum, and I agree, this ought to be in a museum where everyone can enjoy it. Since the Big E is homeported at NOB that would be a great spot for the model.

Yes it is one and the same Big E that was in the FSM in '97....in fact he is throwing in a supposid "like new" autographed copy of it with the ship.

$250,000 - with a higher reserve price even!! Can you imagine the Ebay listing fee!!! The ebay people are giggling at their computers.

Anyone notice the "$10 off your first order with Paypal credit" ad....

I remember from FSM a long time ago that someone had made a 1/72 or 1/144 scale of Forrestal - I wonder what happened to that model (no "caught fire" jokes please...)

Yeah I kind of feel stupid after my post, if I would have scrolled down on the page I would have seen the write up on the item....

Send me to school, buy me books, what did I do, but eat the covers.

Hey,
If every registered member of the site kicks in $37.00 we can buy it...

:-) :-) :-)

I thought this thing was extremely cool when I read the article way back when. Even has working cranes, IIRC. But, a quarter of a MILLION dollars sounds kind of steep to me. Some .com millionaire will probably be floating it in their indoor pool in the near future.

I was reading the postings about it on the Modelwarship web and about 3 of the guys say they'ld do one for a mere $125K. I dug up an ancient FSM from 1987. A guy had done a 72nd scale Nimitx. He only took two years on his. It looks as super-detailed, but I can't tell because back then FSM only devoted 5 pics to it 4 of which were detail as opposed to the8 of which 6 were detail. This guy hopes to sell it to a museum. I heard the one in Ft Stewart paid $100 k for a 1/16th model of a Bradley, so I can see where his expectations lie.
