As I struggle to finish the submarines that I've started for "Triple D" I find my mind racing ahead and planning that long and glorious build of the 1/72nd VIIC. In another post I mentioned I would like to build it as a shadow box-ish affair. Here's what I'm thinking about. I'd like to have the ends, one side , and the top visable and a hinged acrylic top. As you might glean from my chicken scratchings, I'd like to set it in a dry dock scene in for repairs with various support equipment, workers, etc etc. I know that this model is great by itself, but I think it would be even more interesting like this.

So there it is, a brief tour through the inner workings of my....mind.

Well,

Yeah..I guess it really is a Dio. It's setting in a drydock undergoing repairs and re-supply. The scene will be enclosed with a hinged acrylic cover so the whole thing will serve as a diorama and it's own enclosed case. I think I made things confusing when I said I wanted it as a shadowbox-ish affair.

Yeah..I know the sketch stinks. I after I re-sized it, I thought it might be difficult to decipher what I was getting at.

So you think that would be sort of cool?

Ahoy Steve!

For me, your sketch speacks for itself and I understood perfectly what you propose to do!

I think it's a great idea, and if you have the chance to see (or buy) the Andrea book "Das Boot" - a book that they made using their massive VII-C in 1/32 (that Matthew is building) depicted in a dry dock, you'll have a lot of help and ideas to pic

I can only say: Go Steve, Go

Hey Skip!

I'll see if I can find that book. I've been snooping around U-Boat. net looking for photos of the old pens to get an idea how all that concrete would look etc. I've been wanting to get started, but I still need to start the swift boat for my father -in-law and get ready for the Dreadnaught campaign.....too many projects, not enough time.

talk to you later

I know what you're saying - If I could only "model"...
No work, no nothing else

But then, it wouldn't be fun!!!
At all!!!

I don't want to tease you but see this:

hmmmm... I think I will get that book. Now the hard part will be coming up with something original as far as an idea for the scene on my part.

Steve,

IMHO if you'll copy their idea, there's no real problem, because:

1 - It's you who built it
2 - You'll learn several skills in the process
3 - You'll have a lot of fun (about 4ft of it)

So I say - Go for it, Steve!

both ideas are good, only problem with water line is you have to either "butcher " the kit or else build up water/docks a couple of inches to make up for hull height

I Like the waterline idea as well...BUT, I can't bring myself to hack up the kit like that. Plus, those who'll see it may not have ever seen a submarine (up close) much less a U-boat and they're going to wonder what they looked like down there. This way...they won't need to guess.

You could even try to get another one and make one in the dry dock and the other with his dock floaded and ready to depart :-)
That would be a very interest dio!!!!

(No, I don't have that much available area at home and would be killed on the spot for saying this in loud voice, bu you know who :-) :-) )

LMAO :-) :-) :-) Niether do I. I need to find room for my 1/48th B-17, B-1, B-58, B-29, 1/72 B-36, XB-70, 1/32nd F-14, and not to mention my Bismarck and by the end of the Carrier Campaign...a Hornet. And some day, an Edmond Fitzgerald. Once the kids are moved away...then I'll have the entire basement to myself. SWMBO can have the main floor. I am the ruler of the nether world.......

I think that is the plight of our entire species Skip...try being married to an Interior Designer. Then all of your models "disrupts" the flow of the house design... ... What the.....? Thus, I've been banished to the basement with all my kits and artifacts.
