L.O.L., L.O.L., Skipper I love the confidence you have in Brett and myself.
Personally I think you just want to visit us in the hospital after our swmbo's choke us for trying to build that thing in thier houses.
Only if you pay a visit to me (in the insane warden) :-)

Welcome to the small house/big modeling projects desease
As I was laying all that stuff on the pool table to better visualise the build, the wife walked by honing my best fillet knife muttering " that better not be there in 2 hours or you can sleep in your truck "

Fortunatly on the books that I have mentioned before there are some interesting bunker interior and aslo some CGI graphics and it is not that difficult! The main complexity is in a latice tube structure just after the main horizontal wall (bellow the heavy concrete top)All kidding aside the u-boat pen can be added I mean what the hell it's 8' by 8' now might as well add 2' on the one end and put the pen in.
Only other problem now is you got me planning the scratch for the inside of the pen. Thats a dio in itself !!

Sorry for keeping you out, Ron!!
Have you made any improvements on your ADV Schnellboot? (I think that I am not making a mistake here)

Skipper, your all upwards and onwards, with an attitude and foresight like yours you can surely do anything you set your mind to.
I was only jesting on the build, but dam it man I admire your resolve and whatever the hell I'm trying to say.
This dio will happen, especially if your around for the positive attitude and the historical input.
Thanks Skipper [ really ] I will do my best make this work, I mean after all the kits have been in my possession since 1999 and they are not doing anybody any good just sitting there getting dusty with me mooning over them wondering how I'm going to make this all come togeather.
As soon as I find out what the old lady did with my fillet knife I'm starting this monster build [ just kidding swmbos on my side all the time ]

My main problem is SPACE!! If it wasn't for that "little" problem, you can bet that the monster kits (namely Accurate Armours U-boats VII-C and XXIII) would have their Dio's on display - so far they are only in my head

Greetings everyone,
Since it appears we are progressing toward becoming the catalyst for each other's new found enthusiam, I thought I'd share a few renderings of what's currently on the drawing board.

This plan gives me a rail line adjacent to the wharehouse, a double wide bunker, and lot's of extra space to add lot's of little misc. items. However, I'm really trying to keep the width less than 48", with 36" being ideal, so this plan puts me over the limit. The gunboat is a new offering by Firestorm models and although it is of soviet design, it's just too darn cool not to include. I would probably approach it form the angle of a one of the smaller Norweigen sub bases with the gunboat being a captured Russian vessel that had been pressed into service as a German coastal patrol boat. I intend to build it as a rusting, barely seaworth, vessel that is moored "some place out of the way."

Hi skipper, I noticed that as well.
Thanks for the assist.
Ok, here's the plan in a nutshell.
The wharehouse is a must for me as I plan to do a diesel loco and a couple cars. Obviously, the rail line would go with, but I'm not liking the idea that it will push the dio out to 48" on the width.
I think a double wide bunker looks better than a single.
The gunboat is already on order and should be here first of next week. I'm really trying to find a place for it that will convey the idea that it is just parked any old place that they could find space.
The excess ground area will have lot's of misc. items such as AA bunkers, a searchlight, several parked or abandoned veh's. Perhaps even a few small sheds
I'm also trying to keep the dio somewhat balanced, yet not have it looking like everything is specifically staged to fill the base.
Other than that this is as far as I have gotten.
Next up will be more quayside pieces from Acurate Armour to widen and lengthen the current pier.
regards,
Brett

And now for my inputs!
I tend to like more the Option Two
It has a better balance and composition!
And another sugestion, if you'll rotate the composition a little bit it would breack all the staright lines of it
Another way of breacking it, would be the Schnellboot or the U-Boot not to be completely aligned with the pier (leaving or arriving)
Just a (couple) of thoughts!

Yes indeed it's the MIG kit. Good eye. Either that or my rendering skills are better than I thought.
And speaking of rendering skills... you should know that those 3 plans represent about 4 hours of work on Microsoft paint and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't figure out how to skew the angle of the layout. And you not only fixed that, but moved a couple tiems around as well. All in the span of what? 5 minutes? (LOL)

Do you already have the steam locomotive?
I don't want to be a spoiler but perhaps a diesel locomotive would be also very cool (and colorfull)

Well, luckily for me my computer skills are greatly superceded by my modeling abilities. Which isn't so much about me being some great modeler, but rather more so about my complete lack of technical abilities with a keyboard

Ahead of you on that one. I stumbled across those several weeks back so the diesel is already on the list. I'm also thinking about the low-sided gondola and the tank car.

Hello Brett,
Nice project you've got going here. I've got the quayside myself so I appreciate the size of the thing. One book I'd highly recommend is at this address -
http://www.andrea-miniatures.com/ENG/moreinfo/ap-006.htm
You probably already have this book but I thought I'd mention it in case you haven't. If you look at the bottom photo you can see the whole 32nd scale dry-dock. There is a Baluard diesel at the right hand side plus a number of building behind.
I notice you've drawn a netcutter on your drawing of the U-boat. The netcutters were removed from U-boats starting in March 1941. I think that the bunkers were not operational until after March 1941(?). If so, then the U-boat should have no netcutter.
Keep us informed of your progress,
Dougie

Welcome aboard Dougie!
Glad you join in! Already noticed that you pay attention to details - I had to double check the net cutter on Brett's drawing
What is your main modeling interest? Scale, theme??
I have to agree with you on Andrea's Book "Das Boot", its a joy to watch that dio again and again!
Also, I might say that the figures could be more to Andrea Miniatures standarts - If I make them like that I would be very happy!
Have you build your Quay dio?
Once again, welcome!!

Hello Skipper,
I've got a built quayside, though it wasn't built by myself. There is a crane, four vehicles and about 50 figures. I've been doing a few writing projects over the past year or two so once they're finished I hope to get back to modelling. Hopefully my modelling skills won't be too rusty. When I do, I would like to build the U-boat, then add a few more figures and bits and pieces to the diorama. I'd also like to add breakwaters (outboard of the 88mm) to the U-boat, which aren't included in the AA kit, and modify the free-flooding vents. I'd also like to get on with the Revell 72nd VIIC. I've usually worked in 72nd scale up until now so 35th scale should be fun.
Have you seen this excellent diorama in 72nd scale? -
http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/dio/dockyard/72-uboat-kq/kq-index.html
I live quite close to the Accurate Armour factory. When I was there they said they planned, at some stage, to release a VIIC/41 version with snorkel. I don't think this will happen soon, though.
Best regards,
Dougie

This one I never have seen before!
It's a nice scale down of the Andrea's Dio - but the credit must be given to Kelly Quirk for all the work he had! Jolly good work!
It also brings bad memories to me: Diorama Solutions

So I have been near to your house too :-)
At the time AA released their monster model u-boat, Peddinghaus (German Manufacturer) made several sets, three, if I'm not mistaken (very similar to Andreas Conning tower set), of a VII-C, a VIIC/41 and U-Flak Boat!
This sets consisted in the CT and all the fittings (periscopes, antenas, weaponry) and on a waterline section in accordance with the type of CT!
I have seen the U-Flak Boot set built and was very much impressed with it - almost 15 or 16 years ago!!!
Some times this sets appear on evil-Bay
for some price!!!!Although you said you are up to your neck with work, don't be a stranger and drop by evrynow and then

Hi Skipper,
I've added 5 photos to my profile. These show the quayside as it was a few months ago, before I received it. I've had to rebuild quite a lot of things that were broken in transit. Both the U-boat and the quayside were built by Julian Hoyes rather than me so I claim no credit. I haven't got the U-boat...someone else has that.
I hadn't heard of the Peddinghaus models. I will keep an eye out for these kits.
Cheers,
Dougie

That really turned out nice, compliments to your builder for sure.
Can I ask where you got the gantry crane? I not sure if I'm going to do one or not, but so far I haven't run across a kit in the right size.

Hi All!
That quayside looks terrific!
It's full of action and "poetry" (couple near the crane!)!
Simple and very effective - I like it a LOT!
Did you keep the figures as well?
The Medal Ceremony looks very good too
I would say that the Crane was scratchbuilt with Evergreen

Hi Brett,
According to Julian, the crane was "made from scratch, some scale railway parts, some scratchbuilt." The crane was one of the pieces that most interested me about the piece, because I couldn't find any crane kit in that scale.
Best regards,
Dougie

Hi everyone.
Question: Does anyone know what or who's rail track will fit the Baluard model train kits? Surprisingly, Baluard doesn't offer rail. I see Verlindern & VLS both offer ready to go ballasted track sections but I'm not sure if they are going to be compatible.
And just to update everyone, I've been busy cutting and refitting the pier sections, and to my surprise, things are going esier than I thought. To prepare for the fabrication of the U-Boat bunker I needed to remove one of the pier sections so I sawcut it down the center using the front most rail groove as my cutting guide. This left me with the section that comprised the finshed front edge along with the drain groove. I then attatched the modified section to the backside of another section that I had trimmed just short of the rear most rail groove. This left me with a two-sided pier that had finished edges on both sides. All need to do now is repeat this another 5 or 6 times and I'll have a complete pier. Except, I'm temporaily out of materials so I'll have to wait for the AA order to arrive with additional pier sections. They are telling me 3-4 weeks on delivery.
I have some vacation time coming up mid August so am hoping to make some good progress on the project. My goal is to have (by mid September) the pier done, the U-Boat bunker mocked up, the wharehouse(s) assembled and most of everything laid out on the base board so I can see how it's all going to look.
I'll be sure to get a few pics when I reach that stage.
Regards - Brett

Hi Brett
For this I would sugest a trip to a model train shop and buy the needed lenght rail of O or G gauges

Also as a desperate measure, H section evergreen, but you would need to make some thikening of the top surface....
I really am enjoying your work progress, and pics are most welcome
