This is the first ever ship of any kind that I have built, but it was fun and I plan on building a few more.

Welcome to armorama Rob.
thats a very nice Type VII, I really like the camo version and wondered why most people finish it as one of the 1 tone upper hull options.

is it completely out of the box or did you add any scratch or aftermarket stuff?

Rob:

Welcme to armorama. That sub is a great kit to be a first ship build too. It is easy and straightforward and is a Major showpiece of a kit when finished. We are starting a "Dreadnaught "campaign here on 1 August. Any battleship , any scale, any country. We also include the old "ships of the Line" if you are inclined to build one of the old sailing warships. Just go to the home page find the campaigns section. Find dreadnaughts and if you like what you read about the campaign just push the enlist now button. You will be enrolled. We just completed the Dive Dive Dive campaign for subs and everyone that completed it got a campaign ribbon which shows up on your profile page after it has been awarded.

For the most part it is straight from the box. The only thing I added was the wire, because I thought the string was kinda cheesy!

Ahoy Robert!

Welcome aboard Armorama!
Your U-boot looks very good for a first timer!
You have done a good work, and if you still are to it, you can still improve it with just two little things:
- Paint the limber holes that were painted gray in black, from what I can see from your pics are not that many
- The periscopes should be painted steel color, near the housing and grey on top

You have made a good job and should be proud of it!
As Steve Joyce (Blaster76) so well mentioned, if you want to have more fun with this wonderfull group, we are just a couple of weeks to start another great Campaign - Give it a thought

Once again Welcome and Congrats on your U-boot

Hello Robert

Welcome to the wet side of modelling madness.
That's a fine looking VII-c .
Congratulations on the camouflage stripes. You definetely didn't make it easy on yourself by going for the camo version.

Like Elad said, most paint the sub with the 1 tone upper hull.
For the first ship ever built, she's looking mighty fine. Nice subtle weathering. I noticed you drilled or sanded out the flooding holes. Nice job. It really adds a touch of reality to the model.

As STeve and Rui already mentionned, we are just about 3 weeks away from starting the dreadnought campaign. Following in the foodsteps of the previous Dive-Dive-Dive campaign, this should be a very fun build.
Please consider joining in on the fun, and maybe build yourself one of those grand ladies of the seas to accompany your VII-c which will now be sitting alone on your shelf, surrounded by tiger and pantherthanks...
(and after that we've also got a flattops (aircraftcarriers) campaign coming up by the middle of next year, and there are rumours going on about a Dive-Dive-Dive 2 campaign... but this is strictly still on a need to know basis....so please.. ssssssshhhttt.....

Robert,

That is a very nice VIIC. Yep, you should be proud of her and welcome aboard. I hope that you'll join us for Dreadnoughts and DDD2. You've fallen in with a good group here.

A very good looking sub, all the better with the camouflage. One question though, did the flag come with the kit? I know why Revell does it like that, I just don't think it looks right. In my ( personnal, modelbuilding) opinion, I feel a flag should either be (historicaly) correct or left off altogether. A detail like that just jumps out on me.

Cheers
Henk

Hi All!

Just a note on the flag issue:
This is the flag that came with the U-boot model.
As any model built/made in Germany will never be delivered with a swastika (planes, ship flags, ship ID symbols).
It's their policy and a good chance for after market producers.

This is an issue that had long discussions. Just to inform the rest of you guys!

well, I know we could open a new thread on this but perssonally I prefer to have the option to use a flag that has no swastikas on it because I dont feel comfortable showing a swastika on my models after what my family in particular and my people in general went through in the holocaust.
that is why I have been avoiding buiding Luftwaffe planes which always carried Swastikas even though I think they are the best looking planes of WWII.

just for the record there is no law in Israel prohibiting the showing of the swastika or any other third reich or ss symbols like in germany (though in the past Wagner's music was not allowed to be played because in the death camps it was played while people were led to the gas showers)
but there are holocaust survivors who wont feel comfortable with this, and I feel so too so I prefer to use tweaked flags instead.

@ rhenders - Very nice job, esp painting! AND esp for first ship! I'm about to start my u-boat (and first ship too) and will look to your fine example. LOVE the ship's boat, never thought of that!

@Elad - re: flag - I debated whether or not to go full authentic. I did in the end, but for awhile was thinking about an excellent compromise - fill in the blank with the German cross. Has a nice look, celebrates the good parts, and is better than a blank hole.

But I know what you mean, it was weird, and I had to think about it.
