I ILL'd a rather useful book this week that will help me with the dreadnought campaign..entitled Battleship Design and Development 1905-1945 Norman Friedman Mayflower Books 1978.

The book contains a considerable amount of line drawings, photographs, (including an awesome camo job for the Rodney) and explainations of terms associated with the battlewagons and a short section on gunnery. If you have a library that carrys this title, it's well worth the time.

A great primer for those of us who are landlocked and chose the other service.....

Hi Steve!

Although that one isn't in my "library" I can say that all the books by (recently passed away) Norman Friedman are excellent!
Appart from the reading they are always packed with pictures and drawings, which is a good help for us modelers

Glad to see you around

I hadn't heard that Mr Friedman passed away. That's a shame. His books are excellent references. He's kind of the Hunnicutt of ships. I haven't seen the book you're speaking about Steven, but if it's anything like his others I'm sure it's a wealth of information.

I checked out his USN Small Combatants It was useful for the swift, but the best sections were over Gunboats, PTs, and (Gordon's favorite) Tangos and like BWN craft.

I'm trying to locate the one he wrote on carriers as well.

I've got books on Battleships, Aircraft carriers and crusiers. I've also got a couple of those Conway books that have "all the worlds warships" from "X" date to "Y" date which are unbelievably great. My favorite though is "Warships of the World" by Gino Galuppini published in 1986. He goes back to ancient greek/Egypt all the way through to Nimitz class.not a lot of data, but a wealth of line drawings and color paintings

My own favorite Battleship reference is Battleships and Battlecruisers, 1905-1970. The author is Sigfried Breyer. I'm not thrilled with all of the written comentary, for example he seems to think the Bismarck is the be all and end all of battleship design, but the drawings are first rate. They are all to a common scale, 1/1200 I belive, so that with a copier that can enlarge or reduce you can make them any scale you want. The amount of information on the changes made on the ships, especially anti-aircraft guns, is first rate.
