As many have heard, the rumor is true, Revell is working on a 1:72 Gato.
I've just set-up a forum for the Gato, so that people can share info and research and tips to prepare for the launch:

Obviously there will be a lot of talk here and at Finescale and other forums, but we have an opportunity to pour all we know into one place to make it easy. Hope to see you all there.
Good hunting,
Rokket

That's the big question. Looks like they'll be basing everything on the Cobia. I'm just hoping that there will be enough aftermarket stuff to turn her into almost any gato/Balao. This could be bigger than Ben Hur as they say. I've already spent 3x as much on aftermarket and accessories on the revell uboat as the orignal model. I can only imagine hoe much I'll have to spend on the gato...my wife and I will be making many bargains and I'll be doing a lot of extra work..

I am not a big submarine modeler, but even this has got my attention. After this I'll have to start lobbying for a 72nd scale Type IX with wintergarten. It would also be wonderful due to the great submarine interest in the modeling community to make a series of 350 scale WW2 eras to go with all the modern ones. Come on DML and Trumpeter let's get it on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is good news. Far as I know the only Gato that has I've seen is one that is decades old, and who knows what scale. Every time I see the Revell U-boat at Hobby Lobby I'm drawn to it, although I really don't do many German kits. This is a great chance to build one of the boats that actually helped win the war, at least in the pacific.
Any idea on when it will be coming?

The people "in the know" say late 2006, possibly Oct. There are rumors that the instruction sheets are being doen, which says molds are machined...
someone even posted a pre-sales link at some hobby store, says "$82" - but I think that's a bit premature!
