Hi all,

I took some photos of the ICM 1:144 scale Type XXIII U-Boat that my friend has just done.
He's Pete Vill who usually builds aircraft and specialises Russian WW2 stuff.

He's now having a go at some nautical stuff and started with this as a quick OOB build. He did replace the conning tower ladder with his own rungs made out of wire but that was the only changes.

What do you think of the outcome. All comments welcome (especially as it's not my work :-) :-)

All the best

Hi Vic

Thanks for stoping by MSW and thanks for sharing your friends work.
The Type XXIII looks great and although a small model it really stands out.
I like the shading and the colours he used and also the subtle weathering.

One thing that he still can improve is some of the details on the conning tower (I know... I am being picky)

You can pass my Congratulations to Pete Vill
He has done an excellent U-boot!

Thanks Rui,

I'll pass your comments on although I know he's about to sign up himself.

Do you mean more physical detail or painted detail?
He'll appreciate any suggestions.

I know this was a quick build to have a go at the painting and finishing on a sub, when he builds his planes detail is his forte and the detail he gets in the cockpits is brilliant. If he does the same to his nautical stuff they'll be worth seeing.

Thanks again

Hi Skipper,

Thanks for the link, a nice interesting review and a lovely job on your type XXIII.

I'm going to have to spend a bit more time here.
I've got the Revell 1:125 VIIB U-99 to have a practice with. I haven't made a model for years and am not sure I've got the patients anymore :-). I like painting rather than building.

I may post the end result, It'll give you all some target practice :-)

Thanks Vic

Maybe you can join DDD2 Campaign or just take a look at these models (the base was precisely that model):
Miguel Palao's U-552 and Joe Passaseo's U-96 MOD Feature

You'll see that the crew is very friendly, helpfull and always on top of things! And another member is always welcome....
Be aware that once you start building ships.. there's no return!

Hope this gives you that missing motivation

Careful Vic, this place has the nack for getting into your blood and from that point on, you will not be a casual visitor. You bet post some shots of your finished VIIB. I wouldn't worry too much about the end result. Hey we all started someplace. I know you will find the encouragement from others within MSW to continue building naval subjects. Look at me, I was ground pounder in real life ( well we really rode in jeeps) and I have been hooked by the floatie thingys. :-) :-)

Like Rui, I like your friends work on his XXIII. I agree with Rui's comments on the subtle weathering. It he did a great job pulling everything together.

I can't wait to see your work!

Take care
Steve

Hi Steve, thanks for your comments, I know Pete will appriciate it.

No doubt you're right, I'll probably get my anchor stuck on this forum, I went on the figure forum 1.5 years ago and have been there ever since :-)
I just got to try not to run aground.

I'll post my progress as it goes along. There's a lot to learn from you guys.

Take it steady

Rui,

Thanks for your kind words regarding my model of the Type XXIII, as Vic has already stated it was built OOB and used more as a personal test piece to see if I could paint a model to look like it had spent all of its time in water. This is the very first boat (I assume I can call it a boat) model but I think I can say that it will not be my last.

Hey, as a new member joining with a sub does this allow me to gain a DDD2 ribbon???

One question, can you tell me where I can aquire some drawings of type VII u-boats, I have the old Revell kit (it has been in my waiting pile for about 12 years) and I would like to detail it a little before I start on its bigger brother, the 1/72 scal kit.

Thanks again

Steve,

Thanks for your kind comments regarding my first boat model, as Vic has already stated most of my time is spent on Soviet Aircraft builds but I think that I will be doing a boat again, in fact as Vic is aware I already have a Vosper MTB in build for a surprize gift to a friend whose father served on MTB`s during WWII.

Thanks again
