Here's my Memorial Day weekend project. I've always liked the twin 5" turret, so I'm scratch building a 1/72 one.

 Here's some photos.

Hope you like it!

I do like it. I'm impressed by those who can build from a drawing like that....great work!

Here's today's progress. I got the hatches on, the barrels of course and have marked for the rungs. I've got some handles to do and the shell ejector port doors. Hopefully I'll put some paint on her tomorrow.

Probably a simple base. If I had a 1/72 sailor to put beside it it would be cool, but I don't know of any. Haven't thought that far ahead.

Very cool. And all in a weekend!

Seriously, you should do a short article regarding it. I think it would be neat to know how you did this as a step-by step.

I guess I could do that. I'll have to get Skipper's working with paint masks written first.

That's terriffic work! This will make a great display piece!
You can either leave it by itself or make a diorama.
(Doesn't somebody make 1/72 carrier deck sections, and wasn't this exact turret used on Essex class carriers..............Hmmmmm)

Hey guys, should I put blast bags on my 5" turret? I'm thinking of modeling it as a turret from the Juneau.

Hi Kenny,
Nice job on the turret....Are you referring to CL-119 Juneau?...if so, she has blast bags, in most of the pics
I've seen.
Have a nice day and happy modelling!

Hi Kenny,
You're referring to CL-52 with the Sullivans....Ok...can't seem to
find any pics with blast bags...have you?
Leave them off...
Hope this helped...

Hi Kenny
Airwaves used to have some 1/72 white metal WWII Aircraft Carrier crew - or you can choose any of the 1/72 Hecker & Goros suitable sets

Hey Gator!
I have to agree with Skipper on all points here mate...and a little dio with H&G figgies would be a
perfect addition to your turret, Bro...how's it going, by the way?

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words.
The turret is going great. I've finally got the pin holes filled and the sanding done. I sprayed the first color, sea blue, on last night. I may try to get the second color, ocean gray on tonight.

Hey guys, had to switch gears on the 5" turret camo. I can't get a good photo of the camo pattern on the turrets. So, I'm going to do the #1 turret from the USS Hornet CV12. Does anyone have a clue as to the width of the flight deck planking used. I think it was 6" but I'm not sure.

 Thanks...Kenny

You could either use this as a base, or perhaps use the picture to estimate the width of the planks.

I'm still waiting for the detailed interior. leave the doors open and scratch out an interior. Then you could cast resin copies and sell them for a bunch of dough. Imagine the possibilities !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or you could make a bunch of them and start working on a 72nd scale crusier or destroyer. See what friends do..... :-) :-)
