Ahoy me maties, Yarrghh...

Well, we're getting very close to the end of this fantastic campaign, the date of close will be June 30, and I hope that everyone involved that hasn't finished their entry is going to be able to do so! We've already added and extension to 'er, so when it's done, it's done... It's been a terrific ride, my friends, and I will hate to see it end, and I want to thank everyone involved with the campaign for making it a success, and a special tribute to our friend Garry.
Please remember, that if you have not already done so, upload your finished pictures of your entry to the proper campaign gallery album, mates...that's how I'm going to know who gets a completion ribbon (or not! )...we still have a month of build time left, so if you're still building, get busy, and if you're completed, maybe you can build one more entry, eh?
Cheers!

Whew, I've actually been afraid to look when the date was pushed out to. I've been so busy doing Honey Dos the past month I haven't been able to do anything to either Bismarck or Yorktown. So far in May I've loaded a 9 square yard dump truck not once, but twice, took our front lawn out and re-seeded it, planted several flower beds, and various other side jobs. We have been in a "fixer upper" and for six years now we've been fixing it up. We can now see the light at the end of the tunnel and we want to get finished.

I still want to complete these two, and I'm going to do my best to finish them up.

One of TWO plausible explantions I've heard for the origin of the expression "the whole 9 yards".

Allegedly, the length of an ammo belt of .50 Cal ammo in US Fighter planes in WW II was 27 feet.

I think some concrete mix trucks also have a 9 yard capacity as well.

I've been REALLY lucky this year. Only 1 yard of topsoil and another of pea gravel.

I've heard that often also. The only problem with it is that U.S. fighters had guns with different ammo loads. Some fighters, like the P-47, would have differnt guns on the same plan with different ammo loads.

Hi Mark

Construction completed.

Completed model sitting in middle of the modelling table surrounded by nothing ready for paint.

Wife comes along to use the computer removes my open diary sitting in the computer chair and places it not on the large empty computer desk or the modelling chair but right on top of my constructed ship.

"Damage, damage" it looked like an internal explosion ripped her apart. I was a "little" upset as everything is just flattened or broken from the hull up.

Marital relations were/are strained.

Urgent repairs/refit currently underway.

The upside is that I now have a warrant to spend as much time as is needed to repair the damage.

Regards

Sean, I've had this happen twice, and I've foudn there are two ways my wife has handled it. One was she replaced the kit that was destroyed. Obviously she couldn't replace the time that went into it, but we both understood that and I appreciated what she did. The other way as she gave me "permission" to go out and buy a replacement kit. I of course could always say, "but Honey they didn't have that old kit anymore so I had to get this new Trumpeter Hood!" The best of both worlds of course is for you to get HER to pay for the replacement, as long as it was your current hearts desire.

Thanks Guys

I am repairing the damage as best I can in the circumstances plus I am able to "invest" in the Revell 1/72 Atlantic Version U Boat as "damages" or "reparation" for the pain, suffering and mental anguish suffered by myself LOL

Its all good as long as I still meet the campaign deadline and the ship looks ok..

Hi Sean

At least you have someone to blame
I feel for you

My own Arizona was in the final stages when I picked it up a going to glue it to the base... it slipped my fingers and into the floor it went!

The next day I was supposed to take it to our club annual expo - what could I do??
After analizing it, the "only" major damage was to one of the cage yardharms - glued all the loose parts, try to straight the yardharm but with no success.. so I removed the rigging and take it to the expo.

Until WEM send me a new PE set I will let this rest
It looks finished, but it isn't - it is missing the rigging
But for our Garry Beebe Dreadnoughts Campaign here it is:
Skipper's USS Arizona BB-39 Diorama - docking at the Mooring block F7 at Pearl Harbour, December 1941

This photo was taken during our Expo
I will take some more detail shots soon

Hope you like it
Thanks for running an excellent Campaign, Mark

I took a break from my KGV for the last two weeks. It was getting too intense, and wasn't too much fun anymore. I found I was getting annoyed with things easily, and when I snapped two of the secondary guns while gluing down the superstructure I almost threw the whole thing at the wall. Decided to pause to regroup. Taking my mind off it by working on a review for the Figs Forum. Will get back to the KGV after the weekend, and now I'm motivated once more and looking forward to it. I can finish it before the deadline, no fuss.

Hey dave...
That's the best thing to do, mate..set er down and walk away...I myself have just completed an armor subject that if I didn't promise to do a full build review on, I would have tossed it in the trash weeks ago...it's going to be a brutal review, too, man...keep me posted, mate!

You cannot BELIEVE how paranoid and CAREFUL I was as I was bringing my Missouri upstairs from the basement into the family room once I finished. She's NOT secured to the base (and I don't think I will) and I had visions of stubbing my toe on the stairs and watching 9 months of work tumble down end over end.

Naaaaaaah, no stress on THAT score :-) :-)

Why does that sound like a long time, but when I look at what I still need to finish, it's only an instant?

I've got the guns built, the deck painted, now I've got a lot of painting left to do and now we decided to move at the end of the month.

This could be the best ship I never finished.

I should be able to finish in time.....

PE railing is added by now, time to paint. I just made it myself a bit difficult by not working with "sub-assemblies" to paint!

Hi Mark

Just an update.

Yesterday was my day off there was wind and rain (winter in good ol New Zealand) hence I went hard out on my project. More painting and my first attempt working with masking tape on a model.

I think its taking shape nicely and despite some compromises due to damage sustained I think for my first ship its looking ok. I have enjoyed it and learnt heaps thus far.

I will review my progress to date in the harsh light of day this afternoon.

If I am happy all I I have is the decks and detail painting to do now. I realise that this will probably be the time consuming side of things. But I will aim to get some done each day this week if I can.

Therefore I believe that I am well and truly on track.

Sean,
How did that go? I got so frustrated trying to mak the deck of my Nellie with tape, what with all the little bumps and things. I gave up and tried something I'd heard about here... Rubber Cement.. It was a lot faster than tape, don't know how well it will work. But, I finally got some paint applied! With luck, I'll post some in progress shots tonight.

Rubber cement....yes! great idea! I have an Arizona I've been dreading painting the deck for the same reasons...please let me know how yours turns out.

Are you shooting acylic or enamel?

Hi Steve!
I can't speak for the others, mate, but I've used rubber cement with great results...no special brand, type, application, etc...and the stuff peels off easily when you're done...but if you're like me (and with the same amount of bad luck ) you might wanna try the technique out on a "test" subject first...just in case!

Guys,

I tried it on a styrene sample with IIRC enamel paint on it. There was not loss of paint on the sample. I'm shooting S&S Colourcoats. Gosh, I hope it's enamel, I've been using Testor's airbrush thinner to thin & clean up. Paint hasn't globbed up yet.

I also tried a small area with thinned white glue, with food dye as a mask. We'll see how that works too.
