Ahoy fellow submariners,

Some preliminary photos of a Revell 1:125 conversion. This will be my submission for DDD2.

Using the hull of Revell's U-99 and the conning tower of Revell's U-47,
I am converting the kit to an early variant....the original Type VII referred
to by some as the VII-A.

After months of research, I have finally gathered enough photos and
reference to accomplish this conversion.

The hull and tower were stratigically cut as to rematch the parts and
retain the integrity of the shape.

The original Type VII was about 3 metres shorter than the Type B
variant..... .65 inches were cut off.

The conning tower deck is new as Revell's is completely wrong.

Now here is the biggest challenge:

1. This boat had only one rudder.
2. The stern torpedo tube has to be moved to the deck.
3. All the flooding slots have to be added to the lower hull and
the existing one have to be completely reconfigured.

A multitude of other details will have to made and added, as you all know
this 35 year old kit is just a plastic banana!
:-)
So I have finally started and much patience will be needed.

I will post photos regularly as the conversion progresses.

Here are some photos of the preliminary work so far.
Hope you enjoy,
Later
Joe

Aye, Joe,
You do have your work cut out for ye', matie!
But, I know that you and I both feel the same way, my friend, and projects like these make this hobby so interesting now, isn't it?
I have no doubt that you will be successful at this build, and we will be following along with your progress!
Thanks for sharing your details with us, Joe, and get busy!

:-) :-) :-)

I swear Joe, do you purchase your U-Boat kits by the lot? How many of these do you have?

Well I can't wait to see how this one turns out. I'm certain it will be another fantastic job.

About a year and a half ago and before Revell announced the fabulous VII-D,
I went out a got a great deal on the U-99 and U-47. Since these were the only
kits available at the time, bought a bunch. I figured that converting them was
the only way of building a collection of the variants in a displayable scale.

I also intented to build a u-boat bunker using multiple boats. At the time the
only other kit available was the RoG 1:72. Although I have the 1:72 scale kits,
imagine the space required to build a bunker with multiple boats! :-)

By the looks of it, it is likely that RoG will bring out other variants in 1:144
scale but in the meantime, I will use the hulls that I have; the sky is the
limit in as far as building some dios using the older hulls and towers.

Other ideas for dios....

a diving u -boat ... I will only need part of the deck and tower.
a sunken u-boat ...won"t need detail here.
etc.

It would a waste to disregard the two kits that started it all for me.

as Gunny said, I got my work cut out and that is what makes it all....
FUN

Have a nice day and happy modelling!

Joe,

Well what can I say, excellent work looking forward to seeing more as you progress.

On a lighter note my wife was looking over my shoulder to see what all the AHHs and OHHs were about, on seeing that it was just another submarine she retorted that she was happy to see that I was not the only one who needs medical help.

Mine has written me off as a lost cause....I remind her that there are worse habits than model building.

Joe, actually, I think your buying them in bulk like that to use them as a basic hull for a conversion is a fantastic idea. I wish I had you talents so that I could do something along the same lines.

Joe has put it all in one line, to be honest you guys are about the best group of internet based modellers that it has been my privilage to meet, it really make a change to be involved with people who really want to help and assist each other, all too often you see cutting remarks " This is wrong, that colour was not in use at that time and so on".

The type XXIII was the first ship/boat/sub model I had every made, it was meant to be a one off, just some thing different from my normal aircraft models, but it really put the fun back into modelling, so much so that I have purchased a number of the books recommended by you guys along with a number of model Subs.

If this is madness then at least I am in good company.

Ahoy Steve,

My philosphy is simple:

Everyone has talent!

Talent is like a plant....once you plant the seed...you keep watering it and give
it lots TLC.

I have had my moments of the downs....but as once said, in a film:

NEVER GIVE UP...NEVER SURRENDER!

Thanks for the best wishes for next Saturday, and i am happy to join in a virtual drink as long as you don`t mind me lifting a rather large single malt whiskey instead of a beer

Right back at ya, mate!

I'm really happy that you feel that way, Pete, because that's the feeling that I personally try to give to each and every one of our members, whether we talk every day, or just an occasional help post. . .I've been at this hobby a long time, seen lots of changes, done the whole rivet counting, retentive show circuit, and now I'm at a point in my hobby career where I just like to have fun with it, whether I'm building, or talking about building, know what I mean?

I agree that we have a special bunch of blokes here at MSW, no finer bunch of salts anywhere, that I've had the pleasure of hanging with. . .a motley crew, yes, but we all have one thing in common, and that's a true passion for the hobby, and the desire to pass it on to anyone willing to listen!
The knowledge and talent that lurks in these waters here never ceases to amaze me!

Keep Modeling!

Hello,

HiC, Hic, Burp,

Well its 02.00 hours here in the UK and I have surfaced having done battle with a large bottle of single malt, sorry to say lads but I lost, I put up a rather good fight but the begger got my giro compass as I seem to be going round in circles and wobbling, well thats what I will tell the CinC (Wife)

Good night and good hunting

Oh yes seem to remember phoning a friend who runs a model shop here in Bristol and ordering a bl**dy Gato.

Anyone going to the IPMS at Telford this month, if so I will be there on the 19th, could meet up for a real Beer.

Good night/morning

Ahoy Shipmates,

Here is a new photo of the U-35 conversion.

The gray part on the left is the original Revell U-47 tower platform. On the right
is a new part which will be added to the tower. The solid part is a support piece,
the grid is the deck detail. I will sandwich some photo etched mesh between
the two to create the grading found on most u-boat decks.

More photos soon.....

Have a nice day and happy modelling!

Hello Kenny,

Some time ago, I purchased some paper punches from the local dollar store.
They come in very handy around the workbench and the kids also use them
for school projects and scrapbooking. They are the plier type and were
a couple of bucks each.

Got the three sizes that are available in circle form: 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16in.
Also very handy for creating discs. I am still looking for a 1/32 circle.
They are also available in other shapes: square, oval, and rectangular.

Have a nice day,

Joe

Joe,

VERY , VERY nice work there my friend, when one remembers the actual size of the parts you have made your skill and workmanship can be admired.

Can I ask you the thickness of the plastic card that you have used to make the replacement parts, the hole punch that you mention is designed for paper work have you seen the type used by leather workers, a wheel on which several punches are mounted and a common anvil , again plier action.

All The best

Ahoy Pete,

I am using 020" sheet styrene for this part.....punches and cuts quite well.

I have the leather punch, too, but because the cutter is bevelled on the end,
it does not make a precise cut as with the paper punches. The beauty of
the paper punch is that it makes a clean cut and also produces a nice
clean disc that can be used for other parts.

Take care .....
Joe
