Ahoy mates! SmileyCentral.com
Here's my progress so far with the IJN Kongo. I'll use some white glue to make the blast bags. I'm hoping tomorrow to start with the secondary armament.

Looking Good, Gator!
Keep the updates coming in, mate!
What are your plans for this one?

By the way, I finished one of your rope fenders yesterday afternoon, gonna take a pic beside a ruler and e-mail it to ya so you can tell me if it's going to work or not. . .

I Always liked the Kongo, maybe because she was born in the UK. I do think it strange that X turret, or maybe the Japanese refered to it as C, was so far forward of Y, or D.

Good looking work on her.

Hi Kenny

This could come very late, but have you considered using Milliput?
I have used it on my USS Arizona and I think it looks good (with some more texture than the white glues blast bags).
I only suggest this because these blast bags are too big for white glue (excellent for DD's)

My 2 cents

Hey Skip. I ended up using putty thinned down with a little fingernail polish.

This would be an excellent canidate for 350 scale. Lets petition Dragon again. I built one of these in 700 scale 30 or so years ago. Disappointed because there was no detail in the pagoda tower section. In fact that is why I quit doing 700 scale. That severe lack of detail for the superstructure in most of the early kits

I 2nd this one. The one thing that really stands out on Japanese ships is the "pagoda masts." That just doesn't look right in 1/700 to me. I can't say why, I just know they don't have the same effect as photos.

There is a website called Nihon Kaigun where they scanned all the boxtop art from those early 700 scale kits. You guys ought to go over there and ogle some of that. You can see how truely beautiful these ships are with all the details in those famous Pagoada masts of the early IJN battleships. I think that in 350 scale they would be fairly well depicted.

Hi Kenny

It looks good and texturized!
The only thing I can point out is the fact that they should end all at the same lenght in the barrel...
You can try and wrap some lenghts of Tamiya masking tape (or any of your choice - vinil masks?) and set a distance where you should go and stop. It will improve the looks a lot - and it's easy to do!
Hope this helps
Keep up the good work
Skipper

Thanks Skip. I touched the blue and got it on the blast bags. I'll toch those up later.

A fine looking ship she is. Where and when did she go down? If memory serves the only bb that didn't go down was the Nagato which was pounded by bombs and beached.

The Kongo was sunk 21 November, 1944 by the USS Sealion. The only IJN battleship sunk by a submarine.

Looking good, my friend. . .should you do a wash?. . .I think it's entirely up to you, mate, but a light wash would most likely help to bring out the minor details.
How did you do the windows on the superstructure, Ken? Looks very convincing. . .drafting pencil?

Stickers!?! You Blasphemous reptile, you!!!

But seriously, Ken, from the pics, looked like you spent some serious time and energy on them, dude. . .fooled me!
What kind of base are ya gonna do? Have you thought about using the Vallejo water product that Jacob (Redneck) used? I just got some of the stuff a few weeks ago, been messing around with it, and by golly-by-gum, it looks very good (and very easy!)

Update photos.

Hey Mark. I would use the water effect, but I don't have time to order it. Hopefully, if we can get the car fixed and depending on when Renee and Ian gets home, it will go to a contest Sunday.

A truely outstanding OOB. I am amazed on what you did with the kit window stickers. It came out quite well. Any chance you'll put some main deck railings on her? That would be the piece de resistence (sorry I'm of Germanic/Italian orgin and have no clue on French speak) HA HA

Skip, I've been wondering about that. Wouldn't the spotlights be covered with canvas to keep them from the weather?

Steve - I wanted to do this one with no PE. Shoot, it was hard enough getting my old fingers to drill out the barrels!

Yes they could be, but than you have to paint it in canvas colour
I guess the silver could add a little highlight to it
If you are portraing it in a combat situation than the spotlights should be uncouvered for communications porposes...
Just my 2 cents

Was she the one attributed to killing the Johnson or was it Kirishima?
