I hereby dub this thread "The official rule thread.

:-)

For those of you who may be viewing the site in a language other than English, here are the rules in plain ol' text:
--------
-You may build any warship kit between 1/250 and 1/700 scale
----Full hull or waterline kits make no difference
-The warship may be of any type in the time period of 1901 to present day
-No aftermarket details, BUT
---those who already own a PE or aftermarket set for their ship may use it.
-The build will start on March 24 and end on May 15th
---the deadline will be extended by 10 days if 50% of the participants aren't finished with their entries by March 14th.
-No prizes, but shiny campaign ribbons will be awarded to those who finish an entry.
--------

I am ready also.....won't get a start on mine until after the weekend of the 5th/6th of April....unless I get my F-20 for the model show finished before hand....but I doubt it....I think its going to be close!!!!

Anyway...I am doing a 1/260 scale Zhengdefu Chinese Missile Frigate Huainan....should be fun.....will be the first ship I have built in probably 20 years!!! I don't really have much of a choice...I have this...and a 1/350 scale early Spruance Destroyer...and I don't think I want to fiddle with a 2-4 piece hull with my first ship build in 20 years....although I like the Spurance ship better.....oh well..the Chinese Frigate is pretty cool as well!!! If anything it should be fairly unique to what everyone else is doing.

It might just be the occasion to build that japanese light cruiser I've got... but I don't know yet : it'll just depend on how much time I've got then !

I'm in, my Barbarossa build starts in June and the modern armor build has yet to be determined. One week from today and I can start hacking on a boat.

I'm going to give this one a shot. Appropriately enough the only ship model I have is the 1/350 Banner USS ARIZONA. This will be the first ship I've made in about 30 years, and the first ever not destined for immolation in the local pond.

The thing I really like about these group builds is the incentive it gives you to build something out of the ordinary. I concentrate on armor but this will give me a reason to build a ship. I hope everybody makes allowances for being a rookie at this.

Do you realize that from the idea being brought up, to the printing of the official rules took less then a week.. I think this should be a good build, especialy because the majority of us seem to be armor, figure modellers. Fallschirmjagers swiming, and floating Panzers dont count as warships!! :-)

Paul

I'm with you Rodger! My kit is the Banner Arizona as well..

I've dug up a few issues of FSM, and am searching the web for shipbuilding advice. It doesn't appear to be too complicated.

You've probably seen these but here are some good sites for building tips for the Arizona.

http://www.internetmodeler.com/2001/december/ships/Arizona.htm
http://www.internetmodeler.com/2001/september/first-looks/banner_arizona.htm
http://www.rollmodels.net/nworkbench/onlinebuild/arizona/arizona1.php

Also the March issue of Fine Scale Modeling has a good article on building her.

Since I'm really new to ship building I going to try building her OOB. I'm not sure PE items and I are going to be the best of friends anyway. Also the cheapskate in me has a hard time paying more for the PE than I paid for the model itself. The only thing I'm really going to miss from the PE kit is the swept back portion of the forward mast. That looks really good in the PE and really bad on the model itself.

I'm looking forward to doing this ship but I really am looking forward in seeing it displayed on my shelf.

yodaman, i know we are trying not to use aftermarket kits, which is great for me. But can we scratch build stuff to add to the ship???

Yes.

That's why I said specifically in the rules "No aftermarket" If there were to be no scratched details, the rules would say "100% OOB"...

Let this be an official statement:
Scratchbuilt deatails are allowed.

Hey "Shipmates"
It seems that this build has taken off quickly. Being my first one I am involved with on the site can't say how anxious I am to get started. Yoda man thanks for the aftermarket rule. By doing that. My Missouri is back in the game. Can't wait for next week to get here.
i just thought I would throw this out there some people probably already know this but there are a few sites that may help you along with this build.
www.navsource.org (naval source site with sories and actual navy file photos.)
www.modelwarships.com ( the galley and features link has pictures and articles of how some people built these wonders of nature)
I hope these help and these are two I can think of off the top of my head I have a bunch more but I won't list them all here.
A word of warning though. I used to just build Aircraft but since the last two years I find myself building ships with an aircraft or two between each ship project. These thing can be addictive. #:-)
Happy Modeling and let me know if I can help in any way

Your not alone. This will also be my first campaign, and be My second ship. my first being tamiyas 1/72 vosper. as long as i make something that looks slightly like a ship i will be happy. :-)
I plan on taking alot of pictures of my project so that everyone can see my mistakes as they happen.. :-)
I emplore the the rest of the ships crew to do the same. Thus we can learn from each other.

Paul

This is my first "serious" ship as well. But hey, how hard can it be?
I'm still raring to go, the start date isn't coming soon enough for me!

I never thought I'd get to the point where I have to rely on a list to remeber what kits I own.... but I did.

I went and dug the Arizona kit out of its storage box and had a look at the sprues... Can't wait to get started. It'll be a nice change of pace from tanks, planes, and spaceships.

well iwent and picked up a ship kit yesterday. I will be making a 1/700 O-Class british destroyer. I hate doing one color kits, so i chose the o class because it has a camo pattern on it.

Cheers,
Paul
