New submarine kits seem to be surfacing everywhere these days. The latest three offerings come in 1/350 scale from Avis Models.
First up is the USS Sturgeon SSN-637. The Sturgeon was launched February 26, 1966 and is best known for her time spent assisting in the search for the USS Scorpion. With a release date set for February of 2012, this kit will retail for approximately $39.00 USD.
The next offering from Avis is the famous USS Thresher SSN-593. If the name sound familiar, that is because on April 10, 1963, the Thresher was lost with all hands some 190 nautical miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A Court of Inquiry to conclude Thresher had probably suffered the failure of a joint in a salt water piping system, resulting in seawater shorting out one of the many electrical panels, which in turn caused a shutdown ("scram") of the reactor, with a subsequent loss of propulsion. The inability to blow the ballast tanks was later attributed to excessive moisture in the ship's high-pressure air flasks, which froze and plugged the flasks' flowpaths while passing through the valves. Avis’ 1/350 scale model of this historic sub will be released in February of 2012 at a price of approximately $39.00 USD.
The final offering from Avis is the venerable Russian “Alfa” class submarine. Making it’s debut in 1977, the Alfa was the fastest class of submarines ever built. Avis’ 1/350 scale model of this historic sub will be released in February of 2012 at a price of approximately $39.00 USD.
