Now owned by Round 2 Models, Lindberg is re-releasing many of their classic line of kits. After a 50+ year abscence, I thought this one was worth mentioning.
British 'Q-ships' were used in World War I as decoys for German u-boats. Looking like a typical, helpless cargo ship, the unsuspecting u-boat commander could be in for a shock when the ship's hidden armaments would be revealed once the submarine was in firing range.

According to the web site Old Model Kits the original kit release had the layout of the AK-101 USS ATIK, which was formerly the SS-CAROLYN, built in 1912. The CAROLYN was recommissioned as the USS ATIK and at the start of WWI which was a real US Q-ship.

Stated as 1/390 scale, the kit (No: HL400) has 41 parts and is now avaialabe at various on-line retailers with a retail price roughly around $15.00 (US).

Would appear to have curiosity value only. It's a relic from another age of model building. I don't think they will set sales records with it but for $15,- it could be a base to scratch build something.

Apparently brought out because of the upcoming centennial of the Great War, this is still a curious choice for Round 2 to release from its Lindberg holdings. I hope it generates decent sales at the $15 SRP. What gets my hopes up is having Round 2 carry on with the other 1/72 I-boat announced years back but was unreleased. The promotional pics (unlike those for the one that was released with the kaitens) for that sub looked good. --Karl

Still, an interesting addition to certain genre.

As written in the 1/32 PT-109 review at ModelShipwrights: I just peaked at their 2014 catalog 2014 Models Some of those are very nice models, e.g. the pre-WWI and between-wars aircraft: Fairey Flycatcher British Navy Fighter, Hawker Fury-FAF Interceptor Martin-Handasyde Avro Biplane etc. Maybe this isn't a Tamiyagawa supermodel (or even a Supermodel ) kit but I've rued the day mine succumbed to fireworks and lighter fluid: LINK I would buy some of the others I remember because, well, they're just cool and fun! Fulton's Clermont Paddle Wheel Steamship (this one is close enough to HO for a model railroad scene) USS Carronade Barbary Pirate Civil War Blockade Runner Sure, these aren't modern kits but they have their play - perhaps a cure for AMS (Advanced Modeler's Syndrome). I have some of these models and intend to get more someday!

I found this build by Gary Gobel over at Model Warships. He used various photo etchings, different life boats and a copper tube and a little conversion work to make the Q-Ship a coal fired freighter. He said he scratch built an open bridge with a sun shade to suggest a tropical locale for the ship. Sorry, images were removed per request of Model Warships.
