If your looking to build something that went to sea with deck chairs and swimming pools instead of canon and torpedoes then Airfix had two new luxury liner kits for you this month. This first is of R.M.S Mauretania and the second is of R.M.S Queen Elizabeth.
The Mauretania was built at Wallsend-on-Tyne and launched in 1906. For 22 years the Mauretania was the fastest North Atlantic passenger liner averaging 25 knots for the crossing. The Mauretania had nine decks with accommodation for 560 first class, 475 second class and 1,300 third class passengers. During WWI she served both as an armed cruiser and as a hospital ship. She made her last Atlantic crossing in September 1934 and was broken up at Rosyth in 1935
Listed as kit No, A04207, Mauretania has 139 parts and measures 400mm X 47mm (15.75 inches by 1.85 inches) and priced at the Airfix website for @$25.00 (US) plus shipping.
The 83,673 ton Queen Elizabeth was the largest liner in the world when it was built at Clydebank, Scotland and launched in September 1938. She served as a troop ship throughout WWII and was completely reconditioned before entering commercial service in October 1946 on the Cunard Line’s express service between Southampton, Cherbourgh and New York. At 1031ft long, she had accommodation for more than 2000 passengers and a crew of 1290 over 13 decks.
Listed as kit No. A06201 Her Majesty has 131 parts and measures 530mm X 75mm (20.8 inches x 2.9 inches) and priced at the Airfix website for @$33.00 (US) plus shipping.
