The French marine research vessel that assisted in the discovery in the wreck of the Titanic is now available from Revell of Germany.
The Le Suroît is operated by IFREMER - Institut français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer (English: French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea). The vessel was commissioned and built in 1975 by Ateliers et Chantiers de la Manche in Dieppe, Seine-Maritime.
She rose to fame in 1985 when she was involved in a two-ship expedition to search for the wreck of the Titanic. In early summer of that year, the vessel undertook a 10-day sonar mission in an attempt to find the wreckage of RMS Titanic. Aboard Le Suroît on this mission was Robert Ballard. Le Suroît was able to rule out large sections of a pre-determined 150-square-mile (390 km2) search area – between 26 July and 6 August, 80% of the area had been searched. It later transpired that on one of its first passes, Le Suroît had come within only 3,300 feet (1,000 m) of Titanic. The wreck was found on September 1st, 1985 thanks in part to the then novel sonar system she carried -Sonar Acoustique Remorque or SAR.
This kit (No. 80-5131) is comprised of 124 parts and is just over 11 inches(282mm) when completed. It is available from various retailers with pricing ranging from $35.00 to $45.00 (US) plus shipping.
