The Type XVII U-boats were small coastal submarines used for research to test Hellmuth Walter's high test peroxide propulsion system, which offered a combination of air-independent propulsion and high submerged speeds.
Three Type XVIIB boats were completed by Blohm & Voss of Hamburg between 1943 and 1944: U-1405, U-1406 and U-1407. U-1405 was completed in December 1944, U-1406 in February 1945, and U-1407 in March 1945. A further three boats were under construction, but were not complete when the war ended. Another six Type XVIIB's were cancelled during the war in favor of the Type XXI.

This kit (No 350-018) Is comprised of injected plastic and photo etch parts. The completed kit would measure approximately 4.6 inches when completed.

This kit is currently available at retailers who carry Micro-Mir products such as Hobby Terra which lists this kit for $15.00 plus shipping.

Oh dear, another U-boat to add to the stash but at least it's something different and as far as I know its not been done before.

I could find no other references for a kit of the Type XVII when putting this article together except for Micro-Mir's. I found on this post on the Britmodeller forums from a Russian member (who I think is affiliated with Micro-Mir) that gives more images of the kit.

"Spartan" is an understatement, but I guess, so was the prototype. The PE helps a lot. Looks like a pleasant 1 hr, build! (And that includes opening the box!)
