Revell has announced a new version of its Type IXC boat in the IXC/40 fitting with a snorkel.
Trying to give his U-boats a better fighting chance against allied anti-submarine efforts, Admiral Donitz introduced snorkels to his U-boats to allow them to operate their diesel engines while still submerged. The snorkel mast would allow fresh air to be drawn in to the diesel engines and the exhausts to be blow out.

Part of the effort to compensate for the increased weight of the snorkel apparatus involved cutting down part of the submarines' superstructure.

A stop gap measure while the next generation Type XXIs submarines were being developed, the snorkel was another example of too little too late for the Wehrmacht.

This Kit (No, 05133) is scheduled for a November release (oh, so far away!) and with a suggested retail price of £79.99 ($122.82 USD).

This is surprising, since I think most of us were expecting an early IXC to go with the current "late" one of U-505, including the use of a deck gun and earlier towers. But this is a grand bit of news and I'm sure it will get submariners like me saving our pennies.

For myself, I'm still hoping to see a B1 type IJN submarine in 1/72 someday. I'm hoping Round 2 will pick up Lindberg's plan on the kit now that the bought their line of kits.
