Tenryu and her sister ship Tatsuta were Japanese light cruisers commissioned just after the First World War and used in WWII. Both fought at Wake island, off Guadalcanal, and around the waters of New Guinea. Tenryu was sunk by the submarine USS Albacore in late 1942 and Tatsua by the submarine USS Sand Lance in 1944.
Their class design was intended to lead destroyer flotillas. They were long, thin, and fast for a cruiser but carried lighter armor and armament than other cruisers. Kit features two sets of decals.
Both kits (No. HSGS9357 for Tenryu and No. HSGS9358 for Tatsuta) are ‘renewals’ or ‘re-tooled’ kits from previous;y released ones and are effectively replacing those earlier versions. These new releases feature enhanced mold detail like definition to the linoleum decking, changes to the stacks, bridge structures, life boats and more. Both kits are comprised of 100 pieces each and have two options for decals:
For Tenryu:
- I.J.N. July, 1942 (after anti-aircraft weapons are increased)
- I.J.N. December, 1941 (the outbreak of war)
For Tatsuta:
- I.J.N. July, 1942 (after anti-aircraft weapons are increased)
- I.J.N. December, 1941 (the outbreak of war)
Both are slated for a mid-March release. Hobby Link Japan has these kits available for ¥1,600 ($13.50 USD) for pre-order, plus shipping.
