X-Craft was a Midget Submarine developed by the British Royal Navy for Special Warfare and Merit introduces a new kit in 'big PT-Boat' scale!
The submarine with a 4 men crew was 15.9 m long with a maximum diameter of 1.75 m and a displacement of 30 tons. It was powered by a 42 hp diesel engine for surface sailing and a 30 hp electrical power engine for submerged propulsion. The boat had 4 watertight compartments and had removable high explosive packs mounted on both sides of the hull.

On September 20, 1943, six X-Craft submarines were used in an attack on German warships in the port in Norway. Only 2 X-Craft succeed in detonating their loads and inflicted enough damage to German battleship “Tirpitz” and kept her out of commission until April, 1944.

This kit (No MIL-63504) is due for release in April and has a listed suggested retail price for $49.95 (US). It is available for pre-order now from Free Time Hobbies.

Now all we need is the 4 man crew and explosive packs along with some photo etch details. Could make for an interesting pier side dio!

The box top image looks as if the charges are attached to the sides. I sent Todd some images of what is left of a British X class for a short feature.

Correct, both sets of pics show the charges on the sides. As for crew, a simple modification of Italeris Vosper crew would work well.

I have started my build of this really nice kit, and am posting pictures on Facebook here: LINK It would be nice if there was additional PE set available for some surface features. As nice as the Merit kit is, I am sure there must be more small things that can be improved upon.

Nice collection of all the small subs next to each other. Are you considering the submarine campaign for this November?
