I came across an fascinating website recently entitled, Armoured Aircraft Carriers in World War II which tells, “the untold story of the Royal Navy's struggle to invent carrier warfare.”
According to the site’s introduction: “Great Britain was breaking new ground with the first fleet to intensively deploy the concept of carrier air power at war in 1939. Captains, crews, pilots and admirals were making things up as they went along. And the world was watching. Anti-submarine hunter-killer groups? Costly failure. Surprise strikes against major harbours? Resounding success.
Close escorts for convoys running the gauntlet to Malta? It was the ultimate test of doctrines determined during the disruptive 1920s and 30s. So why have the experiments, endeavours and endurance of the Royal Navy’s carrier operations seemingly been lost to history? This website seeks to give you a detailed account of the actions in which Britain's controversial armoured carriers sustained damage, what that damage was, and how well these ships met their design requirements”.

Armoured Aircraft Carriers in World War II offers fascinating reading, great primary source historical information, and tons of pictures. If you have any interest at all in Britain's Fleet Air Arm in the Second World War, you will absolutely LOVE this site!

Great website Tim! Thanks for the heads up! Now all we need is a kit maker with the kahunas to release a RN flat top in 1/350. Not that I begrudge fans of other navies, but seems there's lots of new flat top releases in 1/350 for many other periods and navies, but ships such as the WW2 Ark Royal and WW2 Illustrious which consistently top out the most wanted polls, keep getting overlooked by the kit manufacturers! Sigh.

A magnificent site crammed with information about the Royal Navy during the second world war. It goes to redress the balance and show the world that the Americans weren't the only ones to engage the Imperial Japanese Navy.
