From the Mystic Seaport Maritime History news section, this story of what officials believe it is the submarine SOM, which sank after a major collision with a Swedish ship in 1916.
A sunken vessel has been found in Swedish territorial waters, close to the country’s Eastern coastline. The vessel is identified as a 65-foot long, 12-foot wide Russian submarine, believed to be from the pre-Soviet era.

According to an official statement by the Swedish Armed Forces, it is highly likely the shipwreck is Russian submarine Som, a Catfish-class submarine which sank after a major collision with a Swedish ship in 1916. It is believed Som was carrying 18 people before its fatal collision.

The wreck was discovered last week by Ocean X, a Swedish treasure-hunting outfit.

Upon its discovery, the team identified the submarine to be Russian due to the Cyrillic letters on the hull of the vessel. According to Ocean X, who explored the wreck using a unmanned remote operating vehicle, “The submarine is completely intact, [has] no visible damage to the hull and the hatches are closed.” Ocean X fears the crew was not able to save themselves when the sub went down.”

According to Ocean X, due to the military-nature of the wreck, as well as the potential for the vessel to contain the remains of unidentified Russian sailors, they are taking great care in the investigation of the 100-year-old submarine.

The Swedish Armed Forces stated it is not launching a full technical analysis of the wreck, regarding it to be more of a matter of war history or marine archaeology, in which case the location of the Som may be regarded as a war cemetery.
