USS Sangamon (CVE-26) was a Cimarron class oiler that was converted to an Auxiliary Aircraft Carrier of a class that bared her name. Sangamon was laid down as the Esso Trenton on 13 March 1939 in Kearny, New Jersey. In early 1942 she was designated for conversion to an auxiliary aircraft carrier and arrived in Hampton Roads in February 1942. She was reclassified as AVG-26. before receiving the escort carrier designation of CVE in1943.
