Fujimi of Japan has announced the November release of FUJ42188, a “Chibi-Maru” version of the Imperial Japanese Navy Fleet Destroyer Akizuki.
According to Hobbylink Japan: “The Akizuki has been recreated in a super-tiny, deformed size for you to enjoy it in a whole new way! Paint it, or use the stickers included in the kit to bring it to life! Parts come molded in gray and red.”

This alternative Akizuki can be ordered for ¥1,440 (approximately US$11.00) from Hobbylink Japan at http://www.hlj.com/product/fuj42188

'Chibi' is a common variation to do to things from people characters to vehicles in Japan. It literally translates to 'Short Person' or 'small child', depending on the context that it's used in. A 'cute' theme in modeling hasn't really caught on in the west -yet.

Yes, many of these kits do come with etch. My kids like the look of these. I would feel a lot better getting them one of these ships than the anime girl version.

I agree, Russ. I too feel better about these than those anime girl things. The Chibi-Maru series are cute but without the slightly creepy adult-child vibe of anime.
