"The Crew of the GORCH FOCK Boards the Passat!
... and the surrendered with no resistance! No wonder, because the Passat is always anchored in Lübeck-Travemünde and the 40 sailors from the Gorch Fock were walking her decks resolutely in dress uniform, engaged only on a visit.

The Passat was launched in 1911 in Hamburg and was named after the Passat trade wind. Only in 1951 was the ship fitted with a 1,000 hp Diesel engine so that she could remain competitive even if the wind stopped blowing. The steel fourmasted barque sailed until 1957 as a freighter at speeds of 18 knots on routes initially between Europe and Latin America and later between Europe and South Africa.
After the Passat had survived a heavy storm in 1957, she was taken out of service because her sister ship, the Pamir, sank under similar circumstances.
In 1959 this P-Liner was saved from the breaker by the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and rebuilt as a training ship.

Since 1960 this impressive 115 m long and 56 m high four-master has been moored as a stationary training ship in the estuary of the River Trave. It is possible to visit the ship and even to spend the night or get married aboard."

Thanks Mark Nice real nice. What a handsome looking ship. He says to himself " I must not buy more models I must build, I must build ..." LOL Man this release is testing the 2007 modelling resolution big time and its only 17 odd days into the year. Regards Sean

Hmmm.... Well, Mr. Ford, I've been trying to organize an "Oars and Wind" group build here at MSW for a while, now, mate, if we could get a few more to participate. . .might be a good ship to start with, eh, Sean? ~Gunny

Geez Mark You may well have me breaking my resolution with talk like that. As they say "That's what friends are for" LOL. Actually I would like to build one of these sailing ships. So its very tempting. However reviewing my list of under construction and to be built sobers me up to reality. My mantra is "I am a kit builder not a collector, I am a kit builder not a collector, I am a kit builder not a collector, ...." LOL Regards Sean

:-) :-) I hear ya, Sean! But you know what, I like to call myself a kit builder as well, but just one look at the ever growing (just ask my wife! ) stacks of unbuilt kit boxes, well. . . ~Gunny

[quoteHowever reviewing my list of under construction and to be built sobers me up to reality. My mantra is "I am a kit builder not a collector, I am a kit builder not a collector, I am a kit builder not a collector, ...." LOL[/quote] Easy solution Sean...just build faster! My stash is in the bottom half of the front bath linen closet. When it gets full, then I stop buying. As long as there is room in and I can find everything, look out lhs! Kenny SmileyCentral.com

Easier said than done Considering I buy more than I build :-) :-) I am making a stash for when I retire But I have one 1/350 sailling barge in my stash, for obvious reasons! So, nothing is lost Skipper
