"The Crew of the GORCH FOCK Boards the Passat!
... and the surrendered with no resistance! No wonder, because the Passat is always anchored in Lübeck-Travemünde and the 40 sailors from the Gorch Fock were walking her decks resolutely in dress uniform, engaged only on a visit.
The Passat was launched in 1911 in Hamburg and was named after the Passat trade wind. Only in 1951 was the ship fitted with a 1,000 hp Diesel engine so that she could remain competitive even if the wind stopped blowing. The steel fourmasted barque sailed until 1957 as a freighter at speeds of 18 knots on routes initially between Europe and Latin America and later between Europe and South Africa.
After the Passat had survived a heavy storm in 1957, she was taken out of service because her sister ship, the Pamir, sank under similar circumstances.
In 1959 this P-Liner was saved from the breaker by the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and rebuilt as a training ship.
Since 1960 this impressive 115 m long and 56 m high four-master has been moored as a stationary training ship in the estuary of the River Trave. It is possible to visit the ship and even to spend the night or get married aboard."
