Three new ‘boomer’ submarine kits are now being produced by Micro Mir. All boats are SSBNs (Ballistic Nuclear Submarines) of the US Navy that served before the current Ohio class boats entered service.
The SSBN was developed rapidly in the US Navy during the 1960’s, the first being a stretched Skipjack class SSN (Nuclear attack submarine) hull with a section of vertical launch tubes added. Previous to these boats, US submarines carrying nuclear missiles were of the diesel driven Grayback class that housed two Regulus I or Regulus II cruise missiles. These boats had to surface and extract the missiles out of their bow placed hangars to launch. The first nuclear submarine to be capable to launch nuclear missiles was the one-off boat USS Halibut (available in a very nice kit by Blue Ridge Models).
First, The USS Franklin (SSBN-640), a lead class boat 12 of boats. Second, the USS Kamehameha (SSBN-642), also a Franklin class boat. The third, USS Daniel Webster (SSBN-26) is a Lafayette class SSBN -a class that was evolved from the previous Ethan Allen class of SSBNs. All kits are comprised of injected parts, photoetch details for props and includes decal sheets and instructions.
Depending on your preferred source for Micro Mir kits, each kit retails for approximately from $19.00 to $21.00 (US).
