Are you a fan of large scale World War I ships? Are you looking to give your kit’s deck the appearance of real wood? Then you will be interested in what Vector Cut has to offer.

Specializing in laser cut wood and etching, Vector Cut’s line of real wood decks are made of finely cut 1mm basswood. These upgrades are not an overlay but a replacement for the kit’s plastic decks. Vector Cut says of their wood decks, “This improvement over painted plastic kit parts is an enormous stride towards turning your plastic model kit into a precision scale miniature ship.” Planks and margin planks are detailed in actual scale width from real wood.
As of now, their line offers replacement decks for Zvezda's Imperial Russian Navy Cruiser Varyag and Revell's Imperial German Navy Light Cruiser SMS Emden

The kits
D350-01 1/350 Real Wood Scale Planked Deck for Zvezda's Imperial Russian Navy Cruiser Varyag
“This true scale decking set is state-of-the-art laser cut 1mm basswood. Furthermore, Zvezda's errors in positioning deck features, such as the bow guns, are corrected based on accurate plans. A new level of realism in 1/350 scale.
This set is designed to be used in conjunction with etched brass parts such as the Gold Medal Models etched brass Varyjag/Borodino set. This set requires the model builder to fabricate some deck houses and raised deck features. Scratchbuilding skill is a necessity.”
Retail price is $29.00 USD.

D350-02 1/350 Real Wood Scale Planked Deck for Revell's Imperial German Navy Light Cruiser SMS Emden
“True scale decking set consists of a standard 1mm basswood main deck, and a separate insert sheet of .4mm veneer for fore and aft gun platforms and gratings, resulting in a phenominal scale effect! All deck details shown in the highly accurate 1/200 plan set by P.G. Huff, such as round recesses for the coaling port scuttles, were added. You also get the Emden Wappen and a comprehensive sheet of instructions with scale plans for correcting the hammock bins port and starboard, should you so choose.
Scratchbuilding skill is a necessity but there will be less work involved compared to VectorCut kit D350-01, as Revell has molded the deckhouse sides as separate parts.
This set is designed to be used in conjunction with etched brass parts such as the Gold Medal Models etched brass SMS Emden/Dresden set. An upgrade of the GMM brass, and new sets from other manufacturers, are anticipated soon after Revell's re-release of the Emden and Dresden kits late 2006.”
Retail price is $17.00 USD.

I like the concept of a replacement piece rather than an overlay. It would be easier to scratch out the little bits and pieces rather than try to match the wood up or cut things off and glue on the wood. Wonder if they will tackle some of the BIG ships like Bismarck or the Hood?

I too agree, Mr. Joyce...and I guess that time will tell, of the inclusion of the larger girls in their releases... ~Gunny
