 Ship history:
The hull of the three-masted "Alexander von Humboldt" was built in 1906 and modeled on the sailing ship "Bismarck". Initially, she was known as the "Reserve Sonderburg" when she served as a lightship. Renamed "Kiel", she was ultimately replaced in 1986 with a more modern vessel. At that time the Sail Training Association Germany was lookig for a large sailing ship for its youth work and founded the "Kiel" with its windjammer hull to be the ideal base. After the creation of the German Sail Training Foundation and with the financial backing of Beck & Co Brewers and a Bremen based company, this ship was converted into a threemasted bark, the windjammer for young people. As a school at sea, she was designed to provide the young with an unforgettable and rewarding experience through contacts with the renaming to "Alexander von Humboldt" after a famous German natural scientist and traveller. In 1992 the "Alex" took part in the Columbus regatta in commemoration of the discovery of America.
