Ship History
“Like the Elco's, Higgins 78' boats were periodically updated and reconfigured for the missions they were call upon to perform. Built by Higgins Industries in New Orleans, these boats also took on a gun boat configuration, rather then their traditional torpedo role, because of the nature of wartime tactics in the Pacific. Many PT boats were given the tasks of harassing and controlling the enemy left behind on islands that were skipped over by the advancing allied forces. The PT boats became "Barge Busters" with their relentless attacks on enemy barges and boats used to supply and ferry the enemy from island to island. They were also called upon to support troop landings and rescues.

Higgins boats played a large roll in the Mediterranean Sea area combating enemy shipping. Including duels with German E-boats or S-Boats (Schnellbooten) and heavily armored and armed barges known as F-lighters.”

Now wouldn't it be nice if Italeri released one in 1/35 to go with their Elco.

Hi Yes please release it in 1/35th & I'll have 1. The Italeri Elco was a lovely kit

I tried several years ago to get one of these on ebay. The price was just too prohibative. Glad it has been re-released. I'll have to finally pick one up. Too bad about 96th scale. I thought it had been closer to 80th, though I would have preferred 72 to go along with all my others.

Floating Drydock has some 1/96 fittings and weapons that could really make this kit a beauty. Gator

Sadly, this venerable kit is not what it purports to be and will require a lot of surgery to bring it even relatively close to the boat it claims to depict. The hull is about 5 scale feet too short for the stated 1/96 scale and only vaguely resembles the actual boat in both profile and cross-section. The cockpit is roughly that of a PT 450 series boat. The structure between the turrets did not exist on the actual boat and the radar mast bears no resemblance to the actual unit. The MK13 torpedoes are the correct length for the stated scale. Boats in this group would originally have looked like this (20mm aft missing from the drawing): LINK " TARGET="_blank"> LINK The same boats with the tubes replaced with MK13s and upgraded gun configuration would have looked like this: http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i204/alross2/2091.jpg Al Ross
