Ship History
The IJN Tsugaru was a large minelayer of the Imperial Japanese Navy built by the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, and commissioned on 22 October 1941, just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.
The Tsugaru was similar to but a slightly smaller and improved design of the preceding Okinoshima minelayer. The main difference was the change of the main armament from the 140 mm LA guns used on Okinoshima to 127 mm dual purpose guns, giving Tsugaru better AA capabilities.
In December 1941, Tsugaru participated in the invasion of Guam.
On 29 June 1944 Tsugaru was sunk after being torpedoed by the submarine USS Darter
