Hey Kenny, I could definitely use another week! I've been so swamped, and between finishing out the Kongo, working on my contest entry, and this campaign, my head is exploding. I've finished all of the painting on the Gohten-Go except the deck and just need to do final assembly. But inevitably, just when you think you're done, something pops up.

So count me in as someone begging for another week.

Hello Kenny
I could do with another week or two if possible. It's been too cold in the shed to get things to dry quickly & the oil paint I've used for the weathering is still damp, so I cant finish the final stains, rust etc.

Hey Mark and Kenny!

Would you be up for a sequel on this topic in 2010? I'd like to work out some 'special' effects in the meantime and hopefully employ them for a movie topic in the near future!

Hi Bruce!

Not a bad idea, but thinking about making all those palm trees makes my eyes red!

Here's the scaled down Thunderfish. I'm using Trumpeter's 1/144 Gato kit.

Everything is base coated. I'm still working some of the seams.

Wow, now that's an extension! Thanks a bunch, Mark! I'm still gunning to finish mine ASAP, but it's nice having the extra padding just in case.

Hey Bruce!

I'm too cheap to spring for things like that, so I'll build my own. BTW, that tutorial will be helpful when I need to make a LOT of trees for my dio of the wild 'n woolly Kavieng raid. I think I'll include it in my fire and smoke how-to.

i got in just under the old deadline.

Bruce – PT boat looks sharp! I wood looks good, your pictures are better for sure. Maybe now that its warmer out we can take pics outside with better light.

I re-started mine after the basement disaster, trying to make it under the new deadline; construction almost done, very very basic (and rough) kit, the Monogram Nimitz. You can spend a long time fixing it up, but I went for the basic OOB build with one “special” addition I hope works! I hope to lay down some primer this week, start the main paint job next week.

Kit only has 3 tomcats (in storage configuration, ugh), so need to fix/scratcbuild the proper wing shapes. Any ideas what color to use to paint the tomcats? What shade of grey? I use MM and testors enamels, have a slew of “greys”, trying to find a good match (no, instructions are no help lol )

Will post pics soon

hello all,
thanks for your kind words.
i did a few things i have never done:replaced the prop shafts with brass wire, mounted the model using brass lamp parts and mounting it on a wood base.
the wood used for the AT Gun was balsa wood dipped in dark earth paint and wiped off after 10 seconds.i think that they look like some old wood left in the sun for awhile.
again,thanks for you feedback.
cheers,
Bruce

Here is an example of how bad the parts fit:

After fixing up the seams and bad fit:

More fixes:

The hangars have absolutely no detail and are just an empty space:

Construction finished, flight deck painted:

Some fixing of the fit between the bridge and the deck:

Flight lines painted, catapults dry-brushed and some weathering attempted. Not fully accurate, but best I can do at the moment. Many techniques tried, like using a pilot pen to draw the white lines instead of masking/painting. Definitive learning experience; much time spent fixing up errors. Looks “Ok”, not good but not bad. Good training for the Flattops GB : )

I also painted the anti-fouling red hull, have to take some pics.

What is left is some touch-up and to build the planes. The tomcats are molded in stored mode, need to make some surgery to make the tomcat look in flight:

I hope to finish the planes today and finish the “setup”. Maybe I can finally finish a GB on time! Cheers.

Whew, as always, in under the wire!

The Gohten-Go

Originally built to restore the Japanese Empire after its World War II defeat, this flying submarine armed with drill and Absolute Zero Cannon, comes to the rescue of humanity in the 1960's to battle the Mu Empire and the terrifying sea serpent, Manda. As seen in the movie Atragon.

This model is the 1/700 special edition kit from Fujimi featuring aluminum drill and photo etch.

More pictures are in the campaign gallery...

That is one gorgeous build Dade... Im soooooooo embarassed polluting your fine effort by following it with my half baked idea... but, here is mine... 95% done, needed few more hours to fix couple things and the drasted Future to dry so i can apply the decal..oh well!

I took an original poster for the movie The Final Countdown, and placed my Nimitz on the same place as the poster, which had the "big" Nimitz under the caption, and a smaller one further down the poster; that is where I placed mine:

I did not have time to perforate the poster and make the Nimitz models a 'waterline", using the poster water as the, well, water!

My goofy addition: a tomcat chasing a zero!

you can clearly see the floral wire I used to place the planes... flash maks it REALLY show up!

This one gives you an idea of what I was *trying* to accomplish, some force perspective and mixing the model with the poster:

Another Tomcat taking off to battle the poster zeros! (at a waaaaay too pitched angle!):

Anyways, I had fun with the concept, the actual kit was a bear... not recommended at all... the old monogram. Again, some touchups are missing as well as the 68 CV # decal. But I guess its DONE! I may fix her up a bit and post as a stand alone thread at another time maybe.

Again, my apologies to the fine builds in here, hope I did not bring the quality of the GB down! I did like my poster idea

Didn't come out too bad. was an interesting build.

James I like your use of the poster as a backdrop, something different.

James, no apologies necessary! Your idea is really cool! I honestly would have never thought of such a thing. It's so original and the execution is great!

I always thought the design of that poster was very strange because at a first look, I thought the "small Nimitz" was a some kind of "regular carrier" and the big one coming through the time warp was some kind of super duper 10 mile long carrier from the future in the same space. That's a kid's brain for ya.

I hear ya on what a hassle that Monogram Nimitz is. That was the first ship kit I ever built when I was around 14. Was such a hassle, it kept me away from ships for about 15 years!

But anyways, good work and thanks for sharing such a neat idea!
