Hi Jesper, you still have plenty of time yet. The Seehund is a nice base to work from

I "spot" a Biber thats beginning to look good

Good luck with the seehund, the large surfaces gives ample oppertunity to work with pre- and postshading and loads of filters.

Nice work Jesper & Jullian, both projects coming on great guns

A little progress from my side, base colour of grey sprayed fairly roughly onto the base.

Thanks Simon, Jan,
I tweaked the camo a bit and have found a diver that I can use in a "bailing out" pose:

I think I am pretty much done with this build - I am going to see, if I can´t find some japanese looking figure to accompany it:

Magnificent build and weathering Jan. Black is a difficult color to model and weather but you got everything right here !

Nice Work Jan, the weathering on the black is subtle and very effective.

I am sure I have seen that figure somewhere before Julian, looks effective though.

Yes, it's the getaway Italian
It does give an idea of the scale of the Beaver even if his equipment isn't accurate. Had to amputate his legs and grind down his bottom with a Dremel to get him to fit in the hatch opening. You will have his evil twin hanging around your dockside Simon

Very nice build, Jan. As already pointed out the weathering is spot on.

Julian, nice correction on the camouflage.
Good idea with the guy bailing out even if he uses Italian equipment. A lot of strange equipment was sourced by the Germans from the Italians after their surrender in 1943. Everything from camouflage clothing fabric, hand guns to tanks. So a little scuba equipment is likely to be sourced from there as well.

I have added the base colour and a little grey green camouflage on my Seehund. I assumed that a darker disruptive camouflage would be effective to counteract the spray and bow waves when travelling on the surface. I like the way it looks.
However, checking on the few photos I have it seems like more white was added. That does not seem logical to me(?), but I am also a novice on sea camouflage.
Next are the decals and then weathering can begin.

The colour scheme for the Torpedoes confuses me a bit. According to the instructions they can be painted in a number of black, blue, red, steel, and brass combinations. I have no idea iof this is correct(?).
I have decided the make the torpedoes black with dark red explosive charge and brass screws and brass arming device in the nose. This is according to one of the suggestions in the instructions and it brings some nice colour to the model. Should any other details be painted on the torpedo?

Hi Jesper, the Seehund is looking good there ! I think the idea of the camo would be to break up the shape of the submarine underwater when seen from the air. Surfaced the sub will pull a bow wave and prop wash that will be clearly visible from the air. I painted my ICM Seehund (1/72) in the grey scheme with white blotches on it. The torpedoes would probably have received a quick coat of grey paint for the same reason. I am going to give myself some leeway here though because I like the contrast between the submarine and the torpedoes, (have stepped away from historically correct camo here anyway so might as well go the whole hog now . ).
cheers,
Julian

Hi Guys,

Simon the Maiale looks great, dios coming along really well.

Julian, excellent Bibber.

Guido - class really interesting subject.

Jan, looking good.

I had entered for this with the Bibber but got finished much earlier than expected so it went into another campaign. Excellent looking builds folks, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments, Julian. You are probably right about the camouflage. In that case my camouflage should help break up the outline of the boat seen from the air although it might not be as effective.

Anyway, just as you I have also decided to follow the kit instructions on the torpedoes although in real life the torpedoes might have been camouflaged better.

The same process with the decal markings. As discussed earlier in this tread I think the decals in the kit are based on museum examples and not period photos, so also here I will allow myself some artistic license.

More to follow.

Good morning Guido, thank you ! I loved your "tracked tadpole" diorama, that must have been a challenge in 1/72 scale.

Julian

Thanks for the comments, Julian and Guido. I had a major set back yesterday as I dropped one of the torpedoes onto a stone floor. Both the arming devise in the front and most of the propeller blades broke of. Very difficult to repair without it showing.
My plan about showing the seehund beached somewhere in Europe with just one torpedo just moved closer.

Nice build, Julian. The camouflage came out well. Damn, these things were small. Not for the claustophobic!

I like the idea, Jesper!
Be aware that the boat would be washed into the sand. That way you could cover the wounds of your accidents.
Cheers,
Guido
