Look forward to this GB! Like Keith, I will not be able to start until Late Dec/Early Jan as I finish other GBs (for a change!).

I will be visiting the Sub Museum in Groton CT during the Fall (2 hours from my home). They have three midget subs in their collection; let me know if you would like pics of specific vessels, angles, etc.

Japanese Type A "HA-8"

Italian Maiale "SILURO SAN BARTOLOMEO"

USN SS X-1

I will probably also visit the Submarine Memorial Association /NJ naval Museum in Hackensack NJ, where they have couple more midget subs:

Japanese KAITEN

German SEEHUND

By the way, I found all of the above information at the Historic Naval Ships Association web site, which includes locations for hundreds of historical ships all over the world

I applaud your self-discipline in holding off until other projects are complete--I can't claim that trait!

Though not directly connected to this GB, I am working on a feature to turn the Lindberg I-53 into another class of I-boat (yes, it will be about 85% scratchbuilt!).

Karl - I don't have any self-discipline, I keep signing on to more GBs without finishing the WIPs!

I look forward to your I-53 build!

Would the 1/74th scale Glenco Subchaser squeek by as close enough to 1/72 scale?

Thanks Karl, glad to be aboard.
Hi Jan, I read that you plan to do the "flashy Norwegian" camo including shark teeth etc. Think I'll do a "plain Jane" version. Will be fun to see the difference in appearence then,
cheers,
Julian

Hi Dave!

Well, the subchasers we'ren't known for the submersible qualities, but if you include a sub in the same scale, we won't mind!

I wager to deliver the smallest contender in this campaign:
a German "Grundhai"

The starting point is the rather crude Schatton kit.

Yikes, Guido! It must measure only 15 cm even in 1:24 scale!

Indeed, this little guy s about the size of a small die cast car, yet 72nd scale and submersible!

Scale it up and scratch a 1:16 model - I know you can do it

Interesting choice, Guido. It looks like an overweight manned suicide torpedo. Now I will go and check the internet to find out what a Grundhai is.

It was intended to lay charges, attach spar torpedos or the likes.
Check this out: It's a tracked ground vihicle! Lots of work it this!

Hi karl

have finally got off the fence after a weekend shopping at Scalemodelworld 2010, was tempted by some aerly Austro-Hungarian Holand types in resin at the showin 1/72, but just to much money.

Italeri SLC Maiale for me.

Will post photos at the weekend.

Hi Simon!

I know the feeling. I look forward to your post.

Hopefully, I'll have one of my boats up by mid-winter.

Hi Karl

yeah, could have done some serious money but the subs I think around the £150.00 mark, absolutely stunning detail & interesting boats but just too much money. JB Modelblau also had a 1/72nd Torpedo boat destroyer, loads of resin, cast, turned & etched brass, no price, I guess if you had to ask how much... you couldn't afford it.

Will drag the Maiale out of the loft tonight.

might do the pre start shots... if I can find my camera

I have initially planned to do Italeris 1:35 Biber, but I am getting more and more tempted to break out my second 1:72 Type II A with AMP etch set and cut it down to waterline.

Well-well...

Have fun with the maiale, its such a nice little kit, but can still be improved if you like to.

Cheers/Jan

Have made a start on the Maiale.

The part count is fairly low, but the level of detail is good, figures are rather good (very good by Italieri's usual standard) and a nice little etched fret is included

It is one of these that starts build up quickly, put the stand together first and then started on the body.

will keep you updated.

Coming on nicely Simon, see you chose the long nose version too:

Built this one when it first came out, quick build but very enjoyable. Glad to see some action here, 'bout time I started up on the "Beaver"
cheers,
