Alright fellas, let's see those ships!

I'm going to see if I can't get my hands on some PE for my build, but it may not be worth it with my slowly growing skills. However it does add a lot even in 1/700. Decisions, decisions....

I have way too much on my hands right now - summer, the kids off from school, visit from the states etc... so any activity from my hands will have to wait a month or so...

Hello Keith,
Looking good so far. Sorry about the newspaper with kit before but we are going to put up with the rule for some time.
a member tried to used a already built model for another campaign and got caught. So the rule will have to be still used form awhile.
Cheers,
Bruce

Simon & Jan: No worries mates, I'm a little backlogged with life myself but looking forward to taking on my first ship

Keith: Nice work, I've never seen anybody take on a project that involved rescribing an aircraft carrier deck. If you could make a mini tutorial here on the process I would greatly appreciate it

I was wondering if it is a worthwhile investment to get a PE upgrade for a 1/700 ship? I like the railings and radar mesh, but I don't know how user friendly this stuff would be...

Jeremy I have to admit that I will be cheating on the flightdeck I will not be rescibing any of the markings as I will be using the decal sheet also supplied with the kit, but if these are not of a good enough standard i will be masking and painting them on
Bruce quite understand about the paper and dates Iwas just worried that you may not be able to read it with my dodge photo will get the hull built up and filled in where the gaps are and the post another photo with paper for a better date reading
Cheers Keith

Hello Keith,
No need to post another photo with a newspaper. I movered your photo to a photo program I have and made lage enough for me to read the date.
So keep on building.

@ To everyone else,
Plese remember to post your build with a newspaper with the date showing and post it in this thread before you start your build. I also have to do this.
Cheers,
Bruce

Nice that you are taking the lead Keith - I´m only at the "look in the box" stage on my Sovremmenny

Big question - waterline/seascape or full hull/wooden base ? - think I will gor for the waterline.

Got the Gold Medal etch set - wow!

Thanks Bruce!

A little bit of introduction to my build – the 1:350 Sovremenny from Trumpeter.

The Sovremenny class is a destroyer intended for surface to surface attack – and was designed to complement the Udaloy class which has anti submarine capability. Landing operations was one of the intended roles of the Sovremenny.

The class is armed with SS-N-22 antiship missiles, Twin 130 mm autoloading guns in 2 radarcontrolled turrets and SA-N-7 missiles for airdefence together with 4 30 mm gatlings. To finish the packaged of: 2 twin 553 mm Torpedo tubes and 2 × 300 mm anti-submarine rockets.

A total of 18 build, but only 12 remaining in Russian service and 2 built for the PLA Navy.

Driven by Steamturbines, and not the more normal Gasturbines due to a gab in supply and demand, is often resulting in Sovremennys shoving a lot of dirty black smoke.

While the design apparently generally is considered pretty sound, the propulsion have given some problems, which, in conjunction with lack of funding and suitable crew, has lead to the scrapping of 6 units.

The kit is so-so, a quick search in different sites and forums gives a overview of a kit with several issues on proportions, shape and lacking details/versions. That is not going to stop me from building it – in my forgiving eyes it still looks like a Sovremenny. But I am going to spice it up with the Gold Medal etch set – which is a lot more comprehensive than the supplied Trumpeter etch.

I will comment on fit and quality on the way through the build. The setting will be a waterline display at sea.

Cheers/Jan

Greetings!

I think I finally got rid of the dreaded Red X in my posts! Sorry for the 2 previous deleted attempts!

I originally enlisted with the intent to build the Trumpeter 1/350 Sovremenny. But, I see now that she is in far more capable hands! The only other Soviet warship I have arrived this morning via UPS. I saw the CyberHobby 1/350 USS Yorktown + Soviet Alfa for $19 over the July 4th weekend, so I jumped on the chance to pick up the kits.

I hope the local market advert (with dates) is good enough for "proof".

Jan - Go get her! I'm really interested to see how your build progresses.

Best wishes,

Daniel Chavez a.k.a. "Daniel Chavez"

Nice choice Daniel, but I still think you should give your Sovremenny a try, it would be interesting seeing 2 approaches to the same kit.

Hi Bruce and Jan!

Thanks for the "Green Light".

My 3 year old picked up the parts tree for the Alfa, looked at it, and said, "It's a ship!" I told him, "Yes, it is." He stared at me like I was supposed to discuss the specs and historical significance of the model. I finally said, again, "You're right. It's a ship." He looked at me and said, "No. It's not a ship! It's a Yellow Submarine, just like the Beatles!" I nearly died laughing!!

He then informed me that tonight we are going to paint it blue. I told him that sounded like fun. He handed me the tree and said, "You go make it!"

Soooo, I guess I'm definitely building the Alfa!! No. She won't be blue! However, I am going to let him "help" a bit. He "painted" (with water colors) an old Rafael fighter I had laying around. Very interesting camo! I think he's hooked! He has brush painted that plane at least 5 or 6 times now! When he gets going, he'll "work" on his plane for over an hour, and does NOT want to be disturbed!

I now have every bit of confidence that this little guy is going to get my stash (down the road) and build models WAY beyond my abilities! He really loves working on them!

We'll post our progress pics soon!

Cool, Daniel -get them started early and hooked for good

Aside from that, blue might not be that bad as a base for the blackish finish on the Alfa.
