Okay folks, I've been investigating a couple of options at the LHS's and would appreciate some feedback and advice. Being a complete novice at ship building would the Dragon 1/350 destroyer kits be a reasonable starting point? I have some experience with PE and would like to build a full hull on a display stand.

I would build the kit OOB, so you might need to re-classify me as well.

Thanks in advance, D

Damian, the DML destroyers are generally excellent kits. However, they include a considerable amount of PE, which, according to the rules, would put in the full build category (OOB category rule (iii): Ship Models that have inherent PE or turned barrels or any other multimedia parts are not allowed).

The only drawback for DML destroyers is that in general they don't contain any PE railings. This will have to be sourced elsewhere.

Cheers!

I agree with Stefan!
The DML ship kits are very nice, highly detailed and yet good to work with. What I have seen in your aeroplane kits, D., you'll be able to handle a 1/350 ship kit with PE, no doubt.
In any case a DML kit is inherently a Full Build according to rules, so you should ge a bit of railing to fully complete your build. These are not that expensive and should be readily available.
However, we need a few more participants to join before we can start. So push some of your buddies to join us for the fun of it!
Cheers,
Guido

Some of the Dragon US Destroyer kits include PE railings, but they are generic.
You can pick up railing sets that are custom fit from a number of sources including GMM. But this is not 100# necessary as there is little in the way of railings on these ships and generic stuff should be fine.
Dragon's German destroyers are also excellent as are the Trumpeter ones. Many of the Trumpeter ones some with PE railings.
I have built Dragon and Trumpeter German Z-Class ships and both are excellent.

Hi all. It is my birthday today, and the Minister for War and Finance collaborated with the offspring and gave me this . . . . . .

Now I wonder where they got that idea from

I have opened it up and taken a peek at the (gulp!) 700 plus pieces, and apart from coming to the sudden conclusion that you MSW guys are certifiable, I am really looking forward to getting started on this one.

After doing a bit of Googling, I still need some advice regarding the best set of PE rails to go with it. If I am going to jump in the deep end here, I might as well make sure that it's REALLY deep !

Cheers, D

Welcome to ship modelling, D!
... and happy birthday!
Ship modelling does does create a certain type of lunatic, but I bet you'll enjoy this a lot. I guess you get the feeling why we hardly get more done than 2 or 3 models a year.
Gearing Class Photo Etch is available from Fly Hawk and Gold Medal Models. Bot are recommendable, but Fly Hawk may be a bit over the edge for a first serious ship project.

So any a chance anyone can lure a few people over here?

Cheers,
Guido

I have the Flyhawk and BigEd sets, but for my money the BigEd Gearing set is the one to use. You see it has custom railings whereas the Flyhawk one does not and custom railings are a great thing to have.

... there is no beating the m oney value of Eduard products, but they do lack finesse. Especially the rainiling are much too thick, IMHO... but for a first intense ship kit, it may not even be a bad idea!

Thanks for all of the feedback guys, I can see how easy it could be to get in waaaaay over my head here. I was hunting around last night and found the Eduard handrail set at Sprue Brothers for less than half the price of the GMM set, and since I really only want to use the rails as an add-on for my first build I will probably go down that path.

Thanks again, D

I will put in a kit for a prize. I'll let you know which one in a day or two.

Of course, I will judge as well.

Try Luckymodel as well as they have free postage and cheap prices.
The GMM stuff does not have much detail and normally costs more so I normally only get GMM if no one else makes the stuff. Also, postage from the USA can be ridiculous nowadays, Squadron being especially bad. They wanted $55 to post a small sheet of PE to me in Australia.

Thanks for the heads-up on Lucky Model Warren, they have the set for just under USD $20 with free delivery, will grab one soon.

Stefan, does that Flyhawk set come with a voucher for a straight jacket? That is some seriously dangerous metallurgy my friend!

Cheers, D

That's excellent, mate!
We just made the minimum number. I wish we had a few more, but maybe that'll come in time.
Now starting date:
Given a pretty full plate I should recommend November/December/January.
Duration: 4 to 6 months.

Any takers?

Interesting: I enlisted! Were you logged in when you tried?

Nice price, Jim!
I'll throw in a 1/700 Navarin by Kombrig for the second place.
