Russell,
Amazing work on those boats. They definitely look better with your efforts.

Great work on your boats, Mate - I'm really keen to see how they look under a coat of paint!
To me, your detailing work looks just right and spot on!!
Slow and steady! Nice work and nice to see your Prinz grow, Russ!!

getting there

19th June update
I didn't like how 'chunky' the rubbing strakes looked that I did from sheet styrene, so I've redone them with stretched sprue. On the left the Admiral's boat and the Captain's on the right.

the workboats

and the motor pinaces. I wanted to show the modified version and the unmodified version so you can see how clunky the kit parts are.

So, there's only this one pinace to modify then I am going to fill the gaps and do a bit of sanding, before adding the photo etch...
Thanks for looking

Russell,
Amazing work on the upgrade to the boats. I don't know how you get stretched sprue to be so uniform, I either break it or it looks like a heart monitor.
Really enjoyed the comparison, you have brought them a long way.

Hi Ruuss,
great job modifying the boats, mate!! Not really blobs any longer...and yep, definitely nice job on the stretched sprue. I've given up trying some time ago, never got it to work. Yours looks perfect, and yes, definitely better than the first approach, the re-doing was really worth it!!
Your boats are really looking good now!!
Cheers,
Jan

Thank you very much for the kind words Dave. I'm afraid it's a bit of pot luck with me and stretched sprue: believe you me, there were a lot of, ahem, castaways

I know how you feel about the stretch sprue: I try to avoid it whenever I can, but I felt the rubbing strakes were worth the effort... Chipping slowly away at those boats.

Hi Russ,
The finer strakes do look better, excellent job on the boats, you really have made a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
looking forward to seeing some paint going on them.
Cheers

I too am looking forward to getting some paint on these little beasties, however I fear the dreaded Trumpeter curse of filling and sanding will rear its head again and paint may be some way off

But, on the flip side, this is the final part of this build where I think filling/sanding will make it's appearance: Masts, railings, rigging shouldn't need it. Well, here's hoping. It is Trumpeter after all

Hi Michael!
yes, indeed these pictures are a ghostly reminder of our past follies.
It's sad to think that of all the ships that served in the great wars few survive to this day, and of those that do, they exist as wrecks on the sea bed. Time is now catching up with them and they are now starting to rapidly deteriorate. Either that or it is scrap metal scavengers desecrating the war graves of the brave souls who served on them.
Governments too were notorious for scrapping their fleets: the RN perhaps the most aggressive, and the RN ships that do survive to this day are only by chance that they missed the scrapyard's blow torches.
Back to the Prinz: boats will be finished the prepping stages and ready to paint tonight, along with some other bits n bobs Pics to follow.

 update 25th July, 2017
well, considering it's been nearly a month since my last update I thought it was time to show you folks that I haven't been idle

Work has continued on the boats (along with some other bits n bobs, but mostly the boats). All sprayed up now: it was a case of spray the Hellgrau 50, mask; then the Shiffsboden farbe III, mask; and lastly the wood deck for which I made a mix of 80% Humbrol 62 (Leather) and 20% Humbrol 70 (Brick Red).

So there's a little touching up to do with the hairy stick and then cutting the keels to fit the PE davits (did i mention that the WEM davits don't allow enough gap for the kit's styrene keels, sigh, again) and then I can add the PE to the boats before shipping them.
Thanks again for looking: eventually I'll catch this glacier

That's serious bit of masking on those boats Russ. They look fantastic as a result. And I know how you feel when etch doesn't match the kit it's made for

yep, you said it. Etch is hard enough as it is, without the added complication of it not fitting as it's meant to. This kit and the PE are determined to fight me every step of the way it seems!
