Well here we go with for me the opposite end of the scale. Modern Italeri @ 1/35 to Ancient (1971) Airfix @ 1/72.

First step was putting together the 4 part hull, I'd read on various builds that this is a b****r. I've got to say it went together fairly easily.

I started at the stern and worked slowly forward in steps. The slot the hull sides fit into is overlarge so the sides need to be pushed out in the slots to minimize filler on the outside.

To upgrade the standard kit I'm hoping to use the Coastal Craft fittings

http://www.coastalcraftmodels.com/pdf/pricelist/Coastal%20Craft%20Price%20List%20Nationals%202013%20-%20BT012-040%20CC%20flier%20A5%204pp.pdf

I started with the twin 20mm oerlikon. The gun mount is not correct for this craft so it was a case of modify the kit part.

Started with

Progress so far

Barrels replaced with Albion Alloys tube

To aid in the scratch building I've got one of these

Brilliant bit of kit enabing you to measure to 0.25mm consistently !

Thanks for looking

Now this brings back memories Kev, I built this one when I was about 18 years old, (when this model was first released, longer back than I like to remember ). Be interesting to see what you make of this vintage gem.

Julian we are of an age ;o)

Seem to remember building it but the memory is a bit grey ;o)

Thinking of doing a practise interior lol.

Seem to have posted this in general ship by class instead of military small craft, can the moderators move it across

Great build Kev,

Goes back to my childhood too, have one in the stash, will be watching for ideas. Especially with the coastal craft stuff.

Thanks Simon,
Brush the dust of the Vosper and get building, you know you really want to

Pleased with progress today . . . . The handrail / stanchions around the 20mm according to Airfix were made from 3" dia poles !

Thought I'd go the brass rod approach :banghead: Proably possible but I chickened out and tried with plastic rod. Still an exercise in patience but not to bad and I'm pleased with the results

The circle on the foredeck is the original rail

Next mini project . . . exhausts

Trying to decide what to do about the cr** porthole glass, any suggestions?

Thats for looking

Try using Humbrol Crystal Clear instead of the Airfix "armoured glass" supplied with the kit.

Oops, that should be "Clear Fix" and not Crystal Clear.
My mistake

Hi Keith,

The Fairmile B & D are high on my list. I haven't decided what scale to work in, one of the reasons for the 1/72 Vosper. I want to see if I can work in this scale. . .

Don't watch me I'm a rank amateur - go for it

Cheers Kev

PS How's the Vosper diorama going?

Hi Kev,

She is looking great. That styrene rail looks alot more in
scale than the kit supplies one.

As far as windows, as previously suggested or I have had good
results with any PVA glue that dries glossy.

Cheers,
Joe

Thanks for that Joe, think I need to experiment a bit.

Keith if I might suggest break it down into separate projects like a gun position or jeep. That way you build in stages and get a sense of achievement at each stage.

Its normally not possible to be always on the 'tools' that's when I research the next piece.

Keep posting your steps its great to get encouragement on the forums. Looking back I cant believe the MAS boat took 9 months.

I'm only being selfish I'd really looking forward to seeing your diorama progress

AhoyKev

I used Microscale Krystal Klear for exactly that same task on my never ending Airfic E-Boat build when I lost three Airfix supplied ones inside the sealed up hull.

Check out the results.

Love the stuff now.

Cheers

Great work Kev.

The plastic and feel of the kit reminds me of my Airfix E-Boat build.

Cheers

Another step forward with the 20mm - photo etch been driving me mad today!

Then the whole point of this build is to see if I can manage a) 1/72 (to me micro scale) and B) learn how to manipulate photo etch.

Not to bad not sure about magazines, think i'll check the dimensions tomorrow.

For a bit of light relief I thought I'd make a start on the cowls knowing full well they are going to need alot of work. The fit is better with the locating pins removed ! Clearly seen at the back of the cowl is one of said pins which will need to be ground out. I intend trying to reduce the thickness of the material as well.

My sanity today was saved by listening to others advice ! I now wear a wood workers apron clamped to the desk, if I had a pound for every time this has saved me from crawling round the floor I'd be able to pay someone else to do the build lol

Thanks for looking

Really brilliant Kev, great work. You mentioned the magazines and maybe they deserve attention. The rest is sheer magic.

Update with vents now looking better after having had a good looking at with dental burrs. I tend to use an ordinary battery driver fotating at < 1000rpm rather than model drills rotating at 30,000+ rpm

I wonder how much modelling has improved since the advent of macro photography  I thought I'd finished took pictures . . . Yuk !!

Now the small hunch back vents

To this

For a bit of light relief I turned to the bridge area . . .

Note according to plans/pictures the area above the door does not rise up :banghead: .The various throttles etc seem vertically challanged and the compass is definately feeling rather shy.

The location of the steering wheel would be good for steering with your knees

Stbd side of bridge with two frying pans for use as voice pipes !

Lacking detail on the central bulkhead

Centre compass completely omitted !

Looks like its back to scratch building :yahoo:

The plans shown are from John Lambert http://www.feralchic.../lambert-plans/

Thanks for looking

Cheers Kev

PS Not forgotten 20mm ammo drums Julian ;o)

Hey Kev looks like you could do with that drill with a sanding disc on those finger ends that,s what Macro does for you.
And I think I can guess what he has under his apron thanks Julian
Great attention to the small details there kev

That is going to be major surgery in the bridge area. It will a great improvement if you do change the moulded in details.
Have you ever used Gunze Sabgyo's Mr Disolved Putty?
Would help smoothing out the insides of those vents.
