Thanks Russell.
You do realise Simon is building a completely different ship don't you..
Anyway, I got the old girl all masked up and shot the boot top..
Bit of a pain due to the shape of the hull and the moulded on bits but it wasn't too hard.
Cheers

Nice masking job Warren,
Like the masking material mate, yours was a much trickier job than Bismarck.
Looking forward to seeing more progress.

Hi Warren,
looks good!! - now the imported part, removing the masking. I keep my fingers crossed that everything comes out clean, the shape of the hull doesn't really help masking...
Cheers,
Jan

Hello again.
Masking tape removed from boot top and it looks fine to me.. well it will after a few little touchups..
Then I thought I would give one of the metal 20mm cannons a go. It is a little confusing with some of the bending but we shall see. Here is a picture of the flat chassis still on the fret and a bent one..
Then I placed the brass barrel in position and bent the gun shield support..
Then I glued the support to the shield..
And painted the brass pedestal..
The reason I am trying one of the metal ones is that the actual plastic kit ones are pretty damn good and would take a fraction of the time the metal ones will take. You could always glue the metal shield to the plastic gun if you thought the plastic shields were too thick. Here are the plastic ones on the runner..
Decisions decisions..
Cheers for now

Howdy folks.
Another quick update. I have started work on the turrets with a couple of replacement ladders..
And my reference work for this build arrived..
Well apart from the internet anyway.
Then I have started working from the bow with all the little fiddly bits like hose reels..
And lots of little vents that all need painting..
I got the turrets and barrels painted this afternoon after applying some more photo-etch. Have to paint the blast bags and the tops of the light grey turrets and I can finish them off.
That's all for now.

Nice work Warren,
The Pontos single twenties appear a little fiddly, the only issue ,I had building them for the Duke was the fit of the shield mount to the pedestal, a few of them needed a little fettling to get the lug into the hole. The doo look really decent put together.
Cheers

Agree 100% Simon and I have worked out the best way to construct them. One thing I did notice, the Pontos 4in gun barrels are way too short going off scale plans.

Hi Warren,
great progress!! Your boot topping looks good - despite the in part complicated shape of the hull. The hull looks really good with all the camo on now!!
Nice start on the 15"ers, that's quite an interesting ladder there on the back of the turret! Is that from the Pontos set? I haven't seen one shaped like that yet, looks good! And nice work on the 20 mm single. I would go for the brass - but that's just me
Cheers,
Jan

The problem with the brass barrels are that they are far too short. Like about 2 or 3mm. The kit ones are fine after a little cleanup.
Yes, the ladder is Pontos Jan as is all the brass on this model. Barrels, PW, masts and other parts all brass.
Thanks

Beautiful work on the fiddly parts there Warren! I would be hard-pressed for a decision on the guns too! Keep up the great work on this!

Time for another quick update!
Still going on the Oerlikons. After bending the base for the barrels they were glued in place..
Then after you do 29 of them..
You end up with a tray full. Then you start to bend up the shield mounts..
Then you attach the shields..
and after 29 of them..
you get a tray full waiting for the next step. I also finished the twin 4 in mounts..
And that's where I am up to.
Cheers

Nice Work on the 20mm Warren,
They will look the business mounted. The 4" look pretty good too.
Will you be fitting the brass barrels to them?
Cheers

So Simon no. These barrels look fine in any case.

I will follow your lead when I get round to my Warspite.

Wow - mass production...
It's great that you accepted the Pontos challenge of some 29 Oerlikons - they will stand out on your Warspite - I was talking about those as compared to the plastic 20mm's , not the 4" brass barrels in my post.
2-3mm short, that's pretty bad! Good to know, and no, I would not use them either.
Cheers,
Jan

Yes Jan, definitely mass production. I learned that from the USS North Carolina I built that had over 60 of the darn things!
Here is a piccie of the mounts being attached to their pedestals..
First I glue the pedestals to the foam so they are stable. I then glue the mounts on. Later I will paint them before attaching the barrel part and the glue stops them being blown away by the airbrush.
Cheers Jan

Looking good Warren,
Did find with these mounts on the Duke the fit of the cradles onto the pedestals was poor, the holes were a little small, these look somewhat better.

No Simon the fit on these ones was not good either but gel CA holds them in position pretty well.
OK, time for another update at 3 am in the morning. I got woken up by my shoulder which is having scans this week to find out what is wrong. Old injury from my air force days I think.. or I have another ulcer which refers pain to the back.. who knows. Getting older is not good.
But back to the model, first up, more progress on the bridge superstructure..
Should have it painted this morning. Then we have the radar units that sit on the roof..
The PE went together pretty easily but the reference drawings I used in that Super Drawings book are no where near as detailed as the ones you get in AOTS or Kagero 3D books. But some things still helpful. Then we have the Oerlikons..
I have a tale of woe with them as well.. one of the monting parts, the shield and gun mount, went missing. I saw it drop off the pedestal, I heard it drop off the pedestal but do you think I could find it?? Nope, it has disappeared into the never-never. So I am going to have to use one of the kit ones. I have the barrel assembly and pedestal but that is it. Oh, and gluing them to that foam sheet using PVA wasn't such a ggod thing as when I removed them some of the foam stuck to each pedestal. Had to remove it and the glue with a knife and inevitably some of the carriages got knocked off the pedestals and had to be re-attached. Oh well....
Lastly these a two off the resin searchlights which fit together so well you could just snap them into place BUT I am sure they would part company with each other at some in-opportune time so they are glued. The carpet, or in this case wooden floor, monster is always hungry...
Cheers

Very nice work, Warren!!
I do hope that there's nothing serious going on with your shoulder - I keep my fingers crossed for you!!
The Bridge looks pretty good!
And your mass production line - wow! Well, that carpet master thing is evil, they all seem to come from one family all over the world, be they hairy or woody
The Oerlikons will stand out for sure!!
Cheers,
Jan
